Poseidon is the god of both fresh and salt water, and Horses. Some of Poseidon’s powers were the ability to change form, cause earthquakes, floods, and droughts. The Greeks worshiped Poseidon because they thought he controlled the oceans and rivers. Sailors would especially worship him because they wanted good weather while they were sailing. Some of Poseidon’s sacred animals and plants are: the Cretan bull, horses, dolphins, fish, other marine animals, hippocampi, pine trees, and wild celery. Some of Poseidon’s symbols are the trident, a boulder encrusted with sea creatures, and a wreath of wild celery. Poseidon’s early life and childhood were pretty crazy. “At birth Poseidon was swallowed whole by his father Cronus”, so he basically had a really horrible childhood (theoi.com). Then later Poseidon was saved by his older brother Zeus. Some of Poseidon’s other family is his wife Amphitrite the daughter of Nereus and sea goddess. According to myths Poseidon has six divine children, a hundred mortal children, six nymph children, nine giant children, and three animal children (theoi.com). These children include Pegasus the winged horse son of Medusa, the hero Theseus, Triton the fish tailed sea god, Arion the immortal horse son of Demeter, Polyphemus the cyclops, and Orion sea walking giant. In order to win, they each gave Athens a gift “The god demonstrated his power and benevolence by striking the Acropolis with his three-pronged spear, which caused a spring of salt water to emerge” (Myth web). Then Athena planted an olive tree which was seen as more useful by the people of Athens so Athena won and they built a temple in her honor.
