Rape culture, a term thrown around the internet like wildfire about many cases of sexual harassment and assault. However, what is it truly and does it actually exist? According to WAVAW (Women Against Violence Against Women) the term “rape culture” was coined by feminists in the 1970’s to point out how society blamed victims, normalized sexualy violent behavior, and how we project the acceptance of sexual assault/harassment through media that is seen and heard everyday. In this paper the extent that rape culture has on our society and why social policy should change will be evaluated; and although rape culture could just be an idea made up by feminists and it could be explained off as just words or actions, rape culture exists in the victim …show more content…

As actor Channing Tatum talks about in a facebook live stream “Rape Culture is Very Real”, that porn looks rough and can have rape intentions, that consent isn’t taught properly, and that communication is important in sex and that people just don’t know how to convey that they’re unhappy with what’s happening. Rape culture exists despite claims that it’s just feminists or that it was just an action. It exists in the treatment of victims and in how sexual assault is promoted in media. Rape is a serious thing, and shouldn’t be dwindled down to what the media says. Every two minutes an American is sexually assaulted. Rape culture makes it easy to say sexual assault happens because of this or that, but instead of fighting over whether it exists, the fight should be over how to make sexual assault never happen again. Social policy should be changed with something added in order to protect the victims and to keep the preconceptions away so that convictions are made. Out of 1,000 rapes only 7 cases get a felony conviction, and only 6 rapists will be incarcerated. These statistics are not fair to the victim, and it’s not fair to society to let rapists just wander around because they got off easy because the victim was blamed instead, or they’re an athlete or something whose brand was more important to protect than the people that they affected, and can affect. Laws should be made that require colleges and coaches are required to tell legal officials when a rape happens/ if someone is convicted of rape they have to be incarcerated for however many years/ fines can be put on people who harass a victim with victim blaming. Rapists get away with rape because of loopholes in the system that make it a charge that’s easy to get away with. It can’t keep happening, in order to help society become better; and to make it so rape culture doesn’t have to be a concept that is thought
