Breathing underwater explored many conflicts throughout the novel , such as spousal abuse , family abuse , the consequences of poor communication and low self esteem , but in my opinion the most important conflict in this novel was the consequence of poor communication. The first mate, the owner of the Sally Anne, dominated his life with his boat to the point of never being able to sleep right without the hum of its motors. This artificial connection made between mate and boat can have major complications. From the text we discover that this first mate has dedicated his life to sailing, ever since grade 10. At the finding of the Sally Anne, it becomes an unhealthy obsession of creating, but later not maintaining, the perfect boat. The text shows paragraphs of the first mate going on about the boat, and how he could not leave it for a day. The irony in this situation is that he spent so much recreating this boat, yet rejected the fact the eventual flaws that accompanied the years of use. It was always just another water pump and coat of perfect white paint away from sailing again. At this point it is clear that the boat has become a symbol for him and his insecurities. At the flooding of the boat and at the initial loss of life upon the Sally Anne's wreck the denial towards the destruction shows how he was using the boat as his only life line, now literally as he clings to last of his dream. “Skeletons don’t like to stay in closets,” Clare states in the first pages of Learning Not to Drown, a novel by Anna Sindoa. The protagonist of the novel, Clare, and has plenty of skeletons in her closet, but one in particular stands out from the crowd. Luke, her older brother, just got released from prison for the 3rd time and even though she doesn’t show it, her fear is unimaginable. Anna Shindoa uses a non-linear plot line with narrating shifts and abrupt transitions to provide additional perspectives to the story this structure highlights the twists and turns that ultimately lead to the conclusion that for one to move on with life, they first have to accept their past.
In The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Bauby's communication with the viewer throughout the film is restricted predominantley to internal thought due to his "locked-in" syndrome. Nothing that Bauby says after his stroke can be heard by outside persons. However, when Bauby speaks during the movie, the audience can understand it as if he has the ability to talk. This feature promotes a sort of dramatic irony where the audience is able to know what it is he is wanting to say and can then react to him, but the other characters cannot. Yet, the audience can make a distinction between what Bauby directs towards an outside person and what is meant to keep to himself. The motif of water is a dominant, repetitive example in both stories. In A Thousand Splendid Suns, water comes up multiple times, mainly for tragic events that have happened in the book, or people being “swallowed” by water. Laila heard women talking about how Rasheed’s son died a while ago, “‘You heard how his son died?’...’He drowned didn’t he?’... ‘The boy went into the water unnoticed. They spotted him a while later, floating facedown.’”(228). This is just one of many times where water has come up in the book, specifically being “swallowed” or drowning in water. Also when Pinocchio was brought up, and in that movie, Pinocchio and his father were swallowed by a whale in the ocean. In Life of Pi, the ship that Pi, his family, and zoo animals where on sunk, and that’s how he ended up on a lifeboat with Richard Parker. They were lost at sea, surrounded by water, knowing that any second they could die from it. Being shown from both stories, water was showed as a negative and unfavorable appearance toward the characters and the whole stories
The seas refuse to obey any of man's laws. Winds, storms and currents shift and distort the massive waters, shaping the land that lies within them. Unexplored in regions, the black depths mimic dormancy prior to rising up at unpredictable moments of torrential strength. The ocean's murder, rape and disregard of life is not punishable by any law or code of morality, and in Yukio Mishima's The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea, it exemplifies the perfect order of existence. Surviving according to nature's impulse, the ocean is the model of a raw, reactionary being. To the youths in the story, this emotionless lifestyle is the only means by which one can become aligned with the perfect core of existence. To betray oneself to feelings, morals and similar illusions created by adults is "falling from grace" with one's own distinct, perfect role.
In the short story “ The Open Boat,” by Stephen Crane, Crane does an outstanding job creating descriptive images throughout the entire story. With saying this, Crane uses symbolism along with strong imagery to provide the reader with a fun and exciting story about four guys who 's fight was against nature and themselves. Starting early in the book, Crane creates a story line that has four men in a great amount of trouble in the open waters of the ocean. Going into great detail about natures fierce and powerful body of water, Crane makes it obvious that nature has no empathy for the human race. In this story, Crane shows the continuous fight that the four men have to endure in able to beat natures strongest body of water. It 's not just nature the men have to worry about though, its the ability to work together in order to win this fight against nature. Ultimately, Crane is able to use this story, along with its vast imagery and symbolism to compare the struggle between the human race and all of natures uncertainties.

First to occur is change in the heart rate, this occurs immediately when the face has contact with cold water the human heart rate slows down ten to twenty-five percent. Seals for example undergo extreme changes in their heart rates, from going approximately 125 beats per minute to as low as 10 on a lengthened dive. (Arterial gas tensions, 1989). By slowing the heart rate it reduces the need for bloodstream oxygen, dispensing more to be utilized by other vital organs. Following the heart rate changes peripheral vasoconstriction sets in, which is the narrowing of blood vessels to reduce blood flow and is achieved by a muscular contraction in the blood vessel walls. This decreases the amount of blood that flows to peripheral organs in which do not need a high level of oxygen to function. This is the prevention of blood circulation to certain areas, first to close off are the Toes and fingers, then hands and feet, and ultimately arms and legs. The constriction allows for more blood for use by the heart, brain and organs. Lastly, the blood shift that occurs only during very deep dives. When this happens organ and circulatory walls allow plasma and water to pass freely throughout the thoracic cavity, so its pressure stays constant and prevents the organs from being crushed. In this stage, the lungs' alveoli fill up with blood plasma, which is reabsorbed as soon as the animal leaves the pressurized surrounding. Following his opinions on society’s perception of homosexuality Ocean explains how his feeling came about. He first addresses his loved ones, fans, and supporters thanking them for keeping his secret safe. Then Ocean explains how he spent the past summers with a good friend of his often sharing the same bed as him and there friendship grew intimate but not sexual. The Ocean opens up with “By the time I realized I was in love, it was malignant. It was hopeless. There was no escaping, no negotiating with the feeling. No choice. It was my first love,” (Ocean, 2). “The Swimmer” is an allegory that is narrated in third person point of view as someone who is observing Neddy’s journey. This enables the reader to discover the reactions of friends and neighbors as Neddy arrives at their homes while still revealing the shift of the round character’s own attitude and feelings as his journey through life continues. Cheever wisely tells the story from a perspective in which the reader can still be connected to Neddy from the beginning to the end of the story while learning how his actions have disappointed others and not just himself. It also uncovers the involvement of each character and their relationship with Neddy before and after his mid-life crisis. If this story was told from any other point of view then the reader would only be obtaining one sided, in a sense a close minded, version whereas with a third person point of view the reader is approached to the entire situation given all perspectives. It guides the reader from one meaningful piece to another on an even level without any bias impressions while the story is being delivered.
Since this bond of brotherhood is felt by all the men in the boat, but not discussed, it manifests in small ways as the men interact with each other. They are never irritated or upset with each other, no matter how tired or sore they are. Whenever one man is too tired to row, the next man takes over without complaining. When the correspondent thinks that he is the only person awake on the boat, and he sees and hears the shark in the water, the narrator says, “Nevertheless, it is true that he did not want to be alone with the thing. He wished one of his companions to awaken by chance and keep him company with it” (Crane 212).
Twelfth Night revolves heavily around the shipwreck plot device to split apart the siblings Viola and Sebastian, leading to the development of a bizarre love-triangle and a case of mistaken identity. Besides the rather literal importance of the sea as the driving force for the play’s plot, water appears to resonate as a recurring theme throughout many scenes; specifically, it becomes a living representation for the emotional status of various characters, and woven within the ebb and flow of the tides, qualities such as fate, grief, death (imagined or real), and reflection churn amongst the brackish waters of the play’s symbolic ocean.
