Police duty and how it effects their families is a profoundly entangled discussion. Within police work, officers must keep work at work, their discretion is heavily advised. Due to unimaginable on-field experiences that police officers see, they can never talk about to anyone. The policing work environment is filled with high demand, everyday they are subject to be exposed to human misery or death (Baker). Police officers are more prone to being exposed to heart problems, high blood pressure, PTSD, and suicide. According to a study that was conducted in police suicide, “The number of officers who take their own lives is twice the number of officers killed by felons” (Nanavaty). A police officer’s job is to protect and serve the community that they correspond to, they took an oath to ensure their sworn duties under the profession of “police officer.” Cops become cops because they want to spend their days helping their community—not stick in a desk chair or cubicle (Erstad.) Mike Ardolf, a retired special agent in Minnesota stated, “I wanted to work in a profession that had interaction with the community and provides a sense of security when needed” (Erstad). They are expected and trained to “fix every problem that occurs.” Law enforcement is a stressful environment. Police officers have to deal with our problems, but who has to deal with their problems? PTSD can be a gateway to suicidal thoughts to police officers. Data showed that 25 percent of male and 25 percent of female officers have suicidal thoughts (University at Buffalo).
