We should appreciate our police officers but most importantly we should make sure that our laws are applied fairly. When hearing the phrase “police brutality,” many people imagine batons cracking skulls, tasers electrocuting bodies and bullets penetrating innocent teens. While police officers have been known to use violence, police brutality does not occur as often as many believe. In many situations, officers have to act on impulse and curiosity, despite the backlash the media may create.
In America, police brutality affects and victimizes people of color mentally and socially. Social injustice has become a major issue, which involved the principle of white supremacy vs minorities. The current police brutality that has been occurring is culturally disconnecting ethnicities from one another. According to Cincinnati Police Chief Jeffrey Blackwell, “…the cultural disconnect is very real; you have the weight of generations of abuse on African Americans,” (Flatow, 2016). For example, over the past four years, there have been countless acts of police brutality. The three key deaths of Eric Garner, Philando Castile, and Alton Sterling have become the face of police brutality in the year 2016. People knew that it was unequal treatment of black people by police in the United States and they made it known by creating #BlackLivesMatter.
The article that I have chosen is the issue the National Football League (NFL) dealing with the protest of players taking a knee during the national anthem for police brutality. Fans on both sides of the controversial issue are calling for a boycott. One side view point is that the protest is unpatriotic, and is disrespecting the country, the flag, and members of the military services. While the other side perception of the ordeal is the originator of the protest, Colin Kaepernick, is being blackballed from the league for protesting police brutality happening to people of color. This is leading to process loss calculated by lower viewer ratings. This will affect the revenue in a negative way in future contracts with network television companies. As each day passes, the players are becoming disgruntle, the owners are becoming frustrated, and the fans disappointment is leading to other avenues of entertainment. To bring the situation to an amicable solution or process gain, the owners and the players must come together. Police brutality is an injustice that has been unraveling in America for quite some time now. Police officers have been abusing their power since they have been around. Abuse against African American males by white police officers is getting out of hand. Most officers face no punishment at, and all there is a special code that they follow. Officers follow The “Blue Code of Silence”, which is a code that means they look out for one another. Even with video recording devices, the news, and social media, these events still go on. African Americans take most of the abuse and it looks like there is no end to this.
