Polar Bear Hypothesis

A study done by the San Diego Zoo conservationists, they tested if land based foods were enough to fill the needs of wild polar bears to live. The problem they had to find an answer to was if the polar bears were able to adapt to the land based food and be able to balance their calories to not starve. Their hypothesis was that the polar bears would be able to adapt to the different type of food when they were fasting. This hypothesis was proven false because the polar bears that were fed food were losing weight as fast as the polar bears that weren't fed. The independent variable and dependent variable was how many calories the polar bears would intake as the IV and the DV being the bears weight lost. They compared the un fed bears to the bears …show more content…

I say this because of global warming. Global warming is making the world warmer and who is causing that? It is us humans, we are causing all the ice to melt. It says in the article that the polar bears that are on their own are losing weight at the same rate as the bears that are held in captivity, because the ice in the bears homes are either gone or to weak to hold them so they can't go out and catch seals or fish. Also this is important for the public to know because it brings attention to polar bears. What I mean by this is that the polar bears are becoming almost extinct. When animals are almost extinct humans usually do what they can to help save that species. This is like the African elephants they were on an extinction watch list so humans stopped hunting them and left them alone and let them repopulate. Finally, this is important for the public to know because it lets all of us know how nature is getting messed up. When polar bears can't get the food they need like seals they are kinda forced to go hunt little land animals. When this happens it takes more little animals to feed a polar bear so they are just going around eating all the little animals messing up their population and another food chain. To conclude this is important for the public to know because it shows how humans are affecting the polar bears with global warming, raising awareness for the polar bears, and how the polar bears can mess up a lot of other population because it can't get the calories they
