From Emily Dickinson to Pablo Neruda, poets continue to stitch themes from their everyday lives into their poems. By using, literary elements and devices, such as diction, extended metaphor, and tone, both MT Buckley and Stephen Edgar craft the overarching theme that “Life is Dangerous Business,” in their poems, “Birthday” and “The Secret Life of Books.” Both Edgar and Buckley use diction throughout the poem

The protagonists of these works are two strong-willed and highly admirable women, who prevail in the face of overwhelming odds stacked in everyone’s favor but theirs. In their trying periods of isolation brought about by cold and unwelcoming peers, particularly men, they give their lives meaning by simply pushing forward, and living to tell the tale.

Although television had the ability to reach a greater number of people than it did before the Nixon/Kennedy debate, it shortened the attention span of the public, which made the overall process of elections unfair, due to the emphasis on image rather than issue.

Along the way, we will pay close attention to the style of the poetry, and the strength of words and symbols used to intensify the poets’ revelations.
