The play, “Beauty”, explains the story about two foolish girls, fighting over a magical wish to receive a feature that each other has. Although it is heart wrenching that each of these girls are begging to change their features, it shows us the play’s underlying message;Their will always be problems that affect us. Mostly females, feel this pressure to have a “perfect” image, a minor amount of females blames it on society, other, put the blame on themselves. For example, a campaign exists today against the classic Barbie doll. A majority of women, feel they are in competition with this plastic doll. A large number of people, notice this doll as “unrealistic”, stating that the doll’s waist is viewed as an “unrealistic” view of women. Another example, would be the view on models. Another chunk of women, notice models as “unrealistic” for women, stating that a majority of females cannot execute the “model look”. Nearly all models are skyscraper high, muscular and extremely thin. Women, spot this as a “ridiculous”. A minor amount of women has those features. Women also detect this “impressive” for women and desire to see themselves as “impressive”. This puts pressure on females to be viewed as “perfect”, while “perfect” cannot be achieved. As much as these problems can affect people, it can improve people. Even though, women notice these as “unrealistic” expectations, these are “unrealistic” expectations. Beauty is a cruel mistress. Every day, Americans are bombarded by images of flawless women with perfect hair and smooth skin, tiny waists and generous busts. They are presented to us draped in designer clothing, looking sultry or perky or anywhere in between. And although the picture itself is alluring, the reality behind the visage is much more sinister. They are representations of beauty ideals, sirens that silently screech “this is what a woman is supposed to look like!” Through means of media distribution and physical alteration, technology has created unrealistic beauty ideals, resulting in distorted female body images.
There are several events in the play which at one point or the other take a tragic turn which constantly undercut back into the play by speeches. The idea of women being flawless from men who get there idea from social media everyday needs to be changed. This idea is destroying women causing eating disorders to depression. Women should be able be confident in who they are as a person instead having low self-esteem with the objectification men have on women. Beside objectification comes patriarchy, in some area men take power too far causing violence. Our society needs to stop and think what our commercials are showing our society, we need to show that women can be strong and have power. We do not always need to have the same idea of men being on top but show what women can do.

Our society is entirely based on looks and how “the perfect women should be”. To be pretty you are expected to have the perfect body with the perfect face and hair. You could never cut your hair short because you would be considered a dyke. If you’re makeup isn’t perfect you are considered ugly and if you don’t have the “hourglass figure” you are considered fat and overweight. “Despite higher global self-esteem, women do not feel good about their appearance. You are considered to be a “whore” such as Eve if you sleep around, so women are afraid to do it. You are considered to be “weak” if you stay at home and can’t support yourself, such as Lori. Women in today’s society seem to be having a very difficult time expressing themselves without dealing with lots of criticism. Common values are standing in the way of women’s drive toward molding themselves into whatever they desire. Our culture has made standards about how should women look, act, and conduct themselves that greatly limits what they can do, and still gain respect. Martin S. Fiebert and Mark W. Meyer state that, “[there are] more negative [gender] stereotypes for men than for women.” This idea doesn’t seem to have a great amount of validity in our present society. Society set certain standards that men are supposed to live up to such as strength and confidence, which are more behavioral characteristics. Women seem to be more trapped than men by societies standards because they are supposed to live up to standards dealing with beauty and size, which are more physical characteristics These specific guidelines have been set by society that are sometimes unattainable for a majority of women. The women that follow the specific criteria are greatly respected, and the ones that try and be innovative usually are criticized if not disliked.
In a society similar to the one of the United States, individual’s body images are placed on a pedestal. Society is extremely powerful in the sense that it has the capability of creating or breaking a person’s own views of his or her self worth. The pressure can take over and make people conduct in unhealthy behavior till reaching the unrealistic views of “perfection.” In an article by Caroline Heldman, titled Out-of-Body Image, the author explains the significance of self-objectification and woman’s body image. Jennifer L. Derenne made a similar argument in her article titled, Body Image, Media, and Eating Disorders. Multiple articles and books have been published on the issue in regards to getting people to have more positive views on themselves. Typically female have had a more difficult time when relating to body image and self worth. Society tends to put more pressure on women to live to achieve this high ideal. Body image will always be a concern as long as society puts the pressure on people; there are multiple pressures placed and theses pressures tend to leave an impact on people’s images of themselves.

In the opening of both the play and the novel we are introduced to the two main female characters which we see throughout both texts. The authors’ styles of writing effectively compare and contrast with one another, which enables the reader to see a distinct difference in characters, showing the constrictions that society has placed upon them.
The mass media over the years has had such a profound role in creating an image on how women should be viewed. From their appearance to what their duties are in everyday life, the media has made sure to depict unrealistic images of women. These images have caused not only the male public but women themselves to believe that they must attain a certain kind of body or occupation to fit into society. Women often feel obligated and pressured to comply to this praised image of perfection.

Throughout history when we think about women in society we think of small and thin. Today's current portrayal of women stereotypes the feminine sex as being everything that most women are not. Because of this depiction, the mentality of women today is to be thin and to look a certain way. There are many challenges with women wanting to be a certain size. They go through physical and mental problems to try and overcome what they are not happy with. In the world, there are people who tell us what size we should be and if we are not that size we are not even worth anything. Women, especially those who are younger, are often described as “pretty,” “fair,” or beautiful in these fairy tales and that beauty is associated with usually white privileged women with high moral standards. The ones responsible for this are the media, celebrities, models, and fashion designers. All of these factors play a big role on the development of the standard and how people view themselves. Everyone at one dreams about being the best they can in any aspect. But to achieve that most believe that one of the big factors is outer beauty.
