The platypus is a fascinating creature that has defied science for many years. They have stumped even scientists just by existing. The platypus is recently known for appearing as one the main characters in the popular kids cartoon “Phineas and Ferb” by Disney Channel. However, the curious creature is not typically a super agent like the cartoon shows us. As cool as that would be, it’s not true. Though the platypus facts are just as awesome as the platypus fantasy. This unique creature has a very interesting history linked to its science and how it behaves in nature. Platypuses are not your typical, everyday find. It is very unique and not just in one or two ways. The science and anatomy of the platypus is one of the many ways it is unique. This is because of its diet, and hunting needs. According to Michael L Augee “Platypus” the diet of the platypus is usually worms, small shellfish, and other bottom feeding animals. Augee says they (adult platypuses) lack teeth so they crush their food with horny pads at the back of their jaws. “We can describe the platypus as an opportunist because it eats pretty much what is available.” (Cite 3 pg 55) Though they have a general diet of bottom feeding animals it is not strict. Grant Tom and Dominic Fanning also said it “feeds predominantly on the bottom of the river but has been known to take cicadas and occasionally moths from water surface.” (Cite 3 page 55) The platypus is a hunter. They hunt underwater and swim “gracefully” according to “Platypus” National Geographic. They paddle with their front webbed feet and steer with their hind feet and beaver like tail.
