When Maya first moved to New York, she was just out of college, barely earning enough to stay alive. She did not have a steady job, friends, or health insurance. She was 24, and she had never been to a gynecologist. Maya was scared that a doctor would be too expensive, she was scared of the exam, and she was scared for her health. Hesitantly, she booked an appointment with her local Planned Parenthood. She saw a kind professional doctor, and had a full gynecological exam for only $140 (Barish 1). All she needed was basic health care, and Planned Parenthood helped provide it. Along with health check-ups, Planned Parenthood provides birth control, abortion services, STI testing and treating, and cancer screenings. As a non-profit healthcare service, Planned Parenthood relies on the government for the majority of its funding. Government health service grants and reimbursements account for 43% of Planned Parenthood’s annual revenue (Annual 32). Without this government support, Planned Parenthood would not be able to provide the support it does. Even though some complain that Planned Parenthood is using government funds, it does have a good purpose. The non-profit uses government funds to provide reproductive services to low-income families. According to “By the Numbers”, 79% of Planned Parenthood’s patients have incomes at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level.
