When determining how to write a paper, using someone else’s writing without acknowledging their work is unethical and against academic dishonesty. Plagiarism is a serious offence, which is the using or reproducing of someone else’s original concepts. Plagiarism often disguises the seriousness of the penalties. As a rule, it is important to give credit where needed and to comply with the principle of academic integrity. As a result, any compliance violation of this principle entails a violation of the academic integrity principles. The penalties established by Franklin University can vary and they are determined by the administrator. It can be anything from a zero on the assignment or a failing grade for the class. As a consequence, the student may be required to complete a Student Learning workshop in relation to proper citations. In addition, a student may be denied the right to graduate with academic honors, or they may be released from the university.
In my opinion, plagiarism is unethical. Using someone else’s writing is the same as stealing. Academic dishonesty affects a student’s grades and grades are extremely important to succeed. The situation would be an embarrassment for both the student and the student’s family. Therefore, I do not anticipate going through any of the above situations.
Franklin University offers many alternatives to assist students and avoid plagiarism. They offer workshops to assist in proper APA citations and learning strategies that can be found in the library. Furthermore, Franklin University uses Turnitin.com to help students identify plagiarism in written assignments. Turnitin.com is software that will generate a report, and it will allow the students to make changes to any words matching on their assignments to any other work that is shared by someone else. An alternative way to avoid plagiarizing is through the use of effective
Plagiarism means to steal or borrow someone’s original ideas without their consent and labelling them your own. It can be done in different ways and has been labelled a serious offense in the contemporary world. Deriving ideas from an existing source in one’s work without citation of the work is a form of plagiarism. Also, using a production without crediting the source and committing literally theft are forms of plagiarism that can be charged in a court of law as copyright issues. It is considered fraud because it is stealing someone else’s work and making people to believe that it is your own. It is possible for different individuals to have similar ideas but the manner in which they are expressed cannot be the same. In writing
Etymologically, the word plagiarism comes from Latin “plagiare” meaning to “kidnap” (Das, and Panjabi, 2011). The Merriam-Webster online dictionary defines plagiarize as: “to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own: use (another's production) without crediting the source” (“Plagiarize,” n.d.). Essentially it is a dishonest act consisting in wrongly appropriate what is not yours (“What Is Plagiarism?,” n.d.). Those nuances in its definition may explain the different types of plagiarism. The number of kinds of plagiarism varies from textbook or site. For this paper, we will be limited to the study of four common types of plagiarism as suggested by Bowdoin College. We will start with direct
Plagiarism is the copying of another individual’s writings and ideas. Plagiarism is an idea that has been constructed by society. It revolves around society’s ideas of intellectual and private property. It is considered to be a form of cheating. Often times in elementary schools and high schools, plagiarism is discussed as bad but is not actually prevented. Teachers often do not detect plagiarism and even when they do, sometimes it is ignored. The student is then rewarded with a good grade, ingraining within the student that it is acceptable to plagiarize. Plagiarism affects the ways an individual develops as a person and as a writer.
In today’s academic world many students are challenged when it comes to writing, or so they think. Many of them believe that they can go on the internet and use whatever is needed for the paper they are writing. Maybe it is a lack of knowledge or confidence that they are capable of expressing themselves on paper. The majority of the time many students procrastinate until the last minute to write a paper. There are few thing students need to learn about plagiarism such as what is plagiarism, how to cite sources correctly, methods of detecting plagiarism, and what academic punishment they face when caught.
In conclusion, plagiarism is dishonest and should never be done no matter what. When you plagiarize, you are taking a risk and there are serious consequences.
This essay will be examining why nursing students need to demonstrate a high level of honesty and academic integrity in there work. Plagiarism takes various forms. A student may cheat doing something as extreme as purchasing a paper, hiring someone to write a paper or turning in a paper freely provided by a friend. Many students unknowingly commit Plagiarism by failing to properly cite their sources crediting the authors. Still others cite, but plagiarize by coping much too much and writing far, far too little of their own synthesized thoughts and ideas. Students must be careful about copying too much. If a paper is mostly other writers’ material, that can be considered Plagiarism, even if the student credits their sources.
All in all, plagiarism is bad and ethics are changed for the worse in the world today. It is time for the world to look at itself and see where its ethics are and if they are right or wrong. Change needs to be made and people need to reevaluate their ethics. If a change in ethics are made, then the world will become a better place.
Have you ever known someone who plagiarized, either unknowingly or intentionally? Have you? It is very to plagiarize, today in a world of technology. Sadly enough, many people don't even know what it truly is, which can sometimes lead to plagiarizing without knowing it. There are many different ways to plagiarize, but all are wrong and unjust. Whether someone does it unintentionally or deliberately, plagiarism is wrong. Plagiarism should be corrected, fixed, and deleted before any damage is done.
In my own view, failure to acknowledge or recognize the author of the original work is a dishonorable practice. Students who plagiarize published work are seen to be too lazy to do their own research work and properly grasp the concepts they are researching. Others are used to waiting till the last hour to start their work, increasing the chances of copying information. Most students perceive reading and research as a waste of time and consider some new information to be extremely difficult to understand (Heath 5). Teachers and lecturers who entertain plagiarism produce students with outstanding grades but very poor knowledge and understanding in their field of study (Bhanot, Fallows 173). Plagiarism normally makes an individual loose reliability and integrity in the eyes of the administration, hence getting leadership positions or institutional scholarships are out of the question.
Plagiarism is a very serious topic to be dealt with, due to the fact that it can damage one’s future very severely. It is done often by students in high school and other institutes such as universities and colleges. People plagiarize intentionally and sometimes even unintentionally. The people who plagiarize intentionally are people who don’t really care about their future and career. The people who plagiarize unintentionally are people who do not cite their work properly and completely. Most people that plagiarize do not get a good mark and most likely have to face consequences such as failure, suspension or the chance of being expelled. In conclusion it is believed that one should not put his/her future at risk and try to expand their mind through the process of critical thinking independently, so they do not have to make the mistake of plagiarizing.
Plagiarism is something that is not respected, condoned, or accepted in any part of the education process. Not only does it steal someone else’s work, but it robs students of the learning experience they can gain from assignments. Plagiarism is immoral and unethical. According to the dictionary, plagiarism is “The submission of material authored by another person being represented as a student’s own work,” whether that material is paraphrased, completely copied or fragmentally copied. Basically, plagiarism is “to take ideas or writings from another and pass them off as one’s own” (Webster’s New World Dictionary). Plagiarism has been around since humanities first words were written, making it is easy for students to turn to it. Students will
As students of high school and college, and even in the professional world, we are asked to research and write on subjects that are seen to be important. The research that we are asked to do, has been done many times in the past, which means people are bound to use others’ ideas and words with no recognition, sometimes without even knowing it. This leads to plagiarism, which is something many people have heard of, but never learned the true definition and the harm it can create. Schools and society need to be more proactive in explaining what plagiarism is, how to write correctly in order to prevent it, and teach the consequences plagiarism has.
UMUC’s Policy 150.25 - Academic Dishonesty and Plagiarism states what is expected of students to uphold academic integrity. It lists plagiarism as its top reason for a charge of academic dishonesty. It also describes the procedures for handling the charge of plagiarism. Plagiarism is serious offense on the academia level but does not have official law stature. On the other hand you have Copyright law in which penalties for infringement include civil and criminal penalties.
Plagiarism is a very serious subject to talk about. It doesn’t sound like it is that big of a deal but very serious things can come out of it. Students could lose scholarships and get kicked out of school for something as simple as copying someone else’s work. Students should learn the rules and regulations of the school ,that they are attending, about plagiarism.[1] That’s basically what plagiarism is; copying someone else’s work.
