Piracy Summary I developed an interest in this topic very naturally. I have lived in China for 24 years, watching movies and using software without copyright as all the others do. However, when I learned about loss reports and business law about software piracy, I began to think deeply about the phenomenon. Since my major is Accounting, I could have a new standpoint that is different from either the offenders or legislators. The goal of this report is to give people more background information about piracy and ascertain the factors that consumers’willingness to pirate a product and find solutions. From statistical result at 2010, about 375,000 jobs are lost each year because of piracy (DGA, 2010). Piracy occurs just at the time when a person illegally downloads, shares files, movies, software, music or any other copyrighted material. This is also known as "Peer-to-Peer" sharing or P2P for short. Introduction With the development of worldwide economic, the focus on the topic “piracy” is increasing in our life. From Wikipedia, “Piracy is typically an act of robbery or criminal violence at sea. “The term “Piracy” refers to the act of copying and selling product without a legal permission. To understand why piracy has become a controversial problem, it is necessary to know what is the piracy, the different types of piracy, whether the product is original or pirated, how pirating occurs, effects of piracy on worldwide economy, government laws and penalties implied and how to stop piracy. Definition Piracy is the illegal copying of products; it means unauthorized use or reproduction of copyrighted material. Anyone who sells, acquires, copies material is called pirate. For example, in China, Eliminating piracy is a serious task for the Chinese people. The government is taking measures–defining it as a crime, prosecuting illegal factories, etc.–to reduce software infringement. Some companies with proprietary rights are also trying to lower the price of discs and enhance encryption techniques. Infringement of digital property is always a global topic that draws attention. However severe the problem is, China still has a long way to go in solving it. Conclusion In conclusion, Counterfeiting and piracy are longstanding problems which are growing in scope and magnitude.
