Physical descriptors to express good and evil have been displayed in many ways throughout time. In Robert Lewis Stevensons mystery novella, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, physical descriptions of Jekyll and Hyde are used to reflect good and evil. The description of Hyde in the story depicts a strong feeling of evil throughout the novel.During his walk with Mr.Utterson, Mr.Enfield tries to give a description of Hyde after telling the story of the door.“There is something wrong with his [Hyde's] appearance; something displeasing,something downright detestable” (Stevenson 11). Another symbolism used in the book is between Jekyll’s laboratory and his house. Jekyll’s house is described as a place of wealth and comfort but his laboratory is described as “a certain sinister block of building thrust forward its gable on the streets” (Stevenson 6).
