Monday, February the 26, 2019 Emily and I Janecia Hagood had our first teach at Harris County High School. The class we taught was Mrs. Moss first period honors biology class. Emily and I observed this class two times and planned a lesson plan based off that, and the topic we had to cover for our first teach. The topic was Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration. One of the most important insights of a lesson plan comes from the students. We went into our third observation on March 2, 2018 to discuss how the students think the first lesson went. We asked many groups and gained some great insight. The first question we asked to each group is how the lesson went and why. The students all stated that think it went well, or it went was fun. They
Do you know how you are able to run long distances or lift heavy things? One of the reasons is cellular respiration. Cellular respiration is how your body breaks down the food you’ve eaten into adenosine triphosphate also known as ATP. ATP is the bodies energy its in every cell in the human body. We don’t always need cellular respiration so it is sometimes anaerobic. For example, when we are sleeping or just watching television. When you are doing activities that are intense like lifting weights or running, your cellular respiration becomes aerobic which means you are also using more ATP. Cellular respiration is important in modern science because if we did not know about it, we wouldn’t know how we are able to make ATP when we are doing simple task like that are aerobic or anaerobic.

The Prentice Gallery Chemistry book defines photosynthesis as, “The procedure by which green plants and algae use radiant power from the sun to fuse glucose from carbon dioxide and water.” The glory of discovering photosynthesis does not belong to any one scientist, but rather numerous scientists contributed to refining the concept we now know as photosynthesis. Before describing the process of photosynthesis, I will provide a brief description of several of the important events that led to its discovery.
Cellular respiration and photosynthesis are crucial for all living things. Photosynthesis and cellular respiration are two of the most important processes living things go through. The process of these cycles, where cellular respiration and photosynthesis occur, the importance of cellular respiration and photosynthesis are all things that are very important to our society.
What is Photosynthesis exactly? Well the simplified version that we’ve all been told when we’re young is that it is something that plants do that changes carbon dioxide into oxygen so we can breath. While partially true there is still so much that is missing. Photosynthesis is the process of plants absorbing light energy from the sun into those chloroplasts and converting it into chemical energy, or sugar. Plants use the energy from the sunlight they absorb to convert the carbon dioxide from the air and water from the soil into glucose (sugar) and H2O (oxygen). Living organisms need energy to perform life functions. To obtain this energy all cells must carry out a process called respiration. In nearly every living thing on Earth, the energy comes from the metabolism of glucose. Essentially all living things require basic sugars to carry out respiration. Cellular respiration is a process in which cells produce the energy they need to survive. It is a series of metabolic reactions and processes that take place in the cells of organisms and are essential to all living cells. In this process biochemical energy is converted from nutrients into Adenosine Tri-phosphate (ATP). ATP produced during cellular respiration is the universal energy for all living organisms.
However, while cellular respiration is concluded through animals (and some plants) by modifying food and organic molecules to energy, photosynthesis is the procedure of changing energy from light sources, especially the sun, into chemical energy for plants, algae, and some bacteria. Photosynthesis is a process that ensues within organelles called chloroplasts. These organelles can absorb light and are located inside of leaves. Within the leaf are tiny pores described as stomata, in which carbon dioxide can enter, and oxygen can exit, the reverse process that in which most animals breathe. Comparable to animals, the process of photosynthesis needs water, although rather than drained, water is absorbed through the plant's roots and carried up to the leaves. From my reading I learned that cellular respiration is a multi-step metabolic reaction type process that takes place in each living organism 's cell rather it be plant or animal. It’s my understanding that there are two types of cellular respiration, one called aerobic cellular respiration which required oxygen and anaerobic cellular respiration that does not require oxygen. In the anaerobic cellular respiration process, unlike the aerobic process oxygen is not required nor is it the last electron acceptor there by producing fewer ATP molecules and releasing byproducts of alcohol or lactic acid. The understandings I have gained from this course have completely revamped my way of teaching. I have been using the unit plan and curriculum map I created in this course for the past two years, and my students enjoy it more and more each year. The Importance of Photosynthesis and What it Does for Life According to scientists, life is “the condition that distinguishes animals and plants from inorganic matter, including the capacity for growth, reproduction, functional activity, and continual change preceding death, also the way of life of a human being or animal. ”("Life,”) In order for one to have life, one must have the nine characteristics to be considered a living thing. These nine characteristics are: all living things are made up of cells, living things are able to reproduce, living things use energy, maintain homeostasis, respond and adapt to the environment, grow and develop, have a life span, evolve over time, and are interdependent. All of the nine characteristics have one thing in common, something that is needed for all living things to work, even if they do not know it.
Photosynthesis is the process in which living cells from plants and other organisms use sunlight to produce nutrients from carbon dioxide and water, the image below “Diagram of photosynthesis 1,” helps show this process. Photosynthesise generally creates oxygen as a by-product through the use of the green pigment, chlorophyll, found in the plant that helps this reaction occur. “Photosynthesis provides us with most of the oxygen we need in order to breathe. We, in turn, exhale the carbon dioxide needed by plants,” (factmonster,2017). This is able to show us why photosynthesis is so greatly needed to occur through plants in order to give one another essentials needed for continuity of life. “Plants perform photosynthesis because it generates the food and energy they need for growth and cellular respiration,” (photosynthesieeducation, 2016).
After finishing the teaching part of the lesson, I realized that not everything goes according to plan. For example, in our lesson plan, we had the explain portion detailed and outlined to teach students the technical terms of what they were seeing in the stations and other activities and make it a collaborative effort within groups to work with the vocabulary words. However, the teaching of the plan was not well executed. Also, I learned that teaching a topic does not have to be boring or just full of worksheets. Fun, engaging lab stations and interactive activities can fulfill the standards and requirements just as well, if not better, than basic worksheets and PowerPoint lectures. Lastly, I realized that lesson planning and teaching require a great deal of effort and work, but it is all worth it when a light bulb goes off in a students’ head and they learn something new and are excited to be learning and extend their science
As an educator, there is always room for reflection and growth. Being in this class has provided an opportunity for both. From my knowledge gained in this class I believe that I have become smarter and have learned how to implement different tool into my teaching as well as general life as a teacher. Of the topics discussed in this class, commitment to students, avoiding burnout and reflective practices had the biggest impact on my professional growth.
In the process of completing this coursework, I have realised that every teacher should be all-rounded and equipped with adequate skills of educating others as well as self-learning. As a future educator, we need make sure that our knowledge is always up-to-date and applicable in the process of teaching and learning from time to time. With these skills, we will be able to improvise and improve the lesson and therefore boost the competency of pupils in the process of learning. In the process of planning a lesson, I have changed my perception on lesson planning from the student’s desk to the teacher’s desk. I have taken the responsibility as a teacher to plan a whole 60-minutes lesson with my group members. This coursework has given me an opportunity
My time observing was not only educational for me on how to become the teacher I desire to be, but as well as how to better myself as a student and improve my own learning. I observed some wonderful learning tools that I have since implemented into my own education to develop my own learning.
