As stressful as school is for college students, most agree that they should be allowed to have pets in their dorm rooms. When the argument comes up that pets should be allowed in the dorm room, that does not mean that students only want to be able to have a pet fish. Most colleges now only allow aquatic animals such as fish and turtles and they even have to be in a certain size aquarium tank. Many would agree that when they come back from a very stressful, hard working day at school they would like to be able to cuddle up next to their pup. It is a known fact that dogs, and other furry pets, relieve stress and anxiety, they’re fun, they brighten people’s mood, and they also teach responsibility. Animals on a college campus can pose many problems, however most of those issues can be solved with a little time and effort from those that feel strongly about the issue. Some people say “having a pet is not fair to the other people that are in the building because they may be allergic to dogs or are afraid of them.” An easy way to fix this issue would be to have couple dorm buildings that are specifically pet friendly. Colleges all over the world are starting to welcome pets in their dorm rooms and have created living spaces for students who want to bring their pets. These schools argue that allowing students to take their dog or cat to college allows them to take a little piece of home with them which makes the transition much easier. Schools could also invest in dog parks outside and pet friendly areas that students can take their pets to use the bathroom, similar to the way apartment complexes are set up. This would eliminate any problems that people have with allergies, being scared, or simply just not wanting to deal with dogs in their dorm building. Also, for those that want to live in the pet friendly dorm buildings there should be an extra fee for having a pet which would pay for extra maintenance in those dorm buildings and the pet friendly areas
In my opinion I believe that Dogs are better than cats. I want to have people to help dogs and respect dogs more because dogs help people alot.

I think pets should not even be allowed to even be in a workplace due to the fact that some people are actually terrified of dogs and bring them into a workplace can cause a lot of problems. The only reason I feel this way is because of the fact that animals can be huge a distraction to the workers and customers, they will require a lot of attention like stopping to feed them, give them water, taking them to use the bathroom. Plus, not all dogs are good dogs, you have the nice dogs and the mean dogs, how can a person do their job if you see dogs running back and forth, barking, ETC. Another reason can be that some people suffer from allergies. You really can’t bring one if you work in a fast food restaurant. I fully understand if a person that has a physical disability.
According to the article “Pet Statistics” by the ASPCA estimates there are 70-80 million dogs and 74-96 million cats owned in the United States. It is impossible to determine the number of stray dogs and cats, but the ASPCA estimates there are 70 million cats alone that are strays in the US (“Pet Statistics”). The overpopulation of dogs and cats live either on the streets and die each day, they live in a shelter and try to get adopted, but even then they die. The ASPCA states that nationwide about 7.6 million companion animals enter the shelter and of the 7.6 million approximately 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats (“Pet Statistics”).
School shootings have altered American history greatly over the past two decades. From 1997 to 2007, there have been more than 40 school shootings, resulting in over 70 deaths and many more injuries. School shoot-outs have been increasing in number dramatically in the past 20 years. There are no boundaries as to how old the child would be, or how many people they may kill or injure. At Mount Morris Township, Michigan, on February 29th, 2000, there was a 6 year old boy who shot and killed another 6 year old girl at the Buell Elementary School with a .32 caliber pistol. And although many shootings have occurred at High Schools or Middle Schools, having more guns on those campuses would not be a good environment for children to grow up in. However, on a college campus, the pupils attending are not children anymore; the age range is from 17 to mid 20’s. Therefore they understand the consequences associated to the use of weapons and have gained more maturity. In April 16th, 2007, at Blacksburg, Virginia, there was a shooting rampage enacted by Sung-Hui Cho (23 years, from Centreville, VA) who fired over 170 rounds, killing 32 victims, before taking his own life at the Virginia Tech campus. Colleges and Universities would be a much safer place, for student and teacher, if guns were permitted on campus for self-defense purposes.

To help get a good idea on what pet overpopulation is and how it's a problem, some ideas need to be explored. We need to know the major factors behind pet overpopulation and cause it to perpetuate. Have you ever wondered how much it costs to have and maintain a pet? Burkhard Bilger, the author of “The Last Meow”, explains how Americans spend a lot of money on their pets and that people's “love affair” with their pets has gotten out of control. An observation I have made is that in many movies dogs are treated very well. When I was younger, I watched a movie called Bratz and one character would always have her dog inside a dog purse and they would even get manicures and pedicures together. The dog always had shiny clothes on and it was always very clean. Therefore, I agree with Bilger's argument that Americans “love affair” with their pets has gotten out of control.

They say your dog/pet is your best friend. Dogs are known to relieve all sorts of panic when in times of distress. “Pets provide an unconditional love, giving students something they can always rely on when they are feeling down” (Merrihew). In a study by Dr. Kathleen Adamle published in the Journal Of American College Health 90.3% of participants indicated receiving comfort and support from their pets during stressful times. The comfort given by the presence of a pet has been acknowledged within hospitals and elderly homes for some years now, but research on the affects with college students is a new but growing field. Researchers have found that the benefits of owning a pet grows for those individuals who grew up with a pet or who have a pet back at home. These individuals miss their pets at home, and are used to being comforted by their dog/pet. The next argument is that it’s possible to rescue an older that is already trained. If you rescue a dog not only are you helping yourself but you are also helping the dog by giving it a safe place to live, its easier on both parts. Dogs who are already trained are pretty simple and don’t ask for much. Rescuing a dog allows for the student to learn to balance all their personal responsibilities. During my life, I have had different pets ranging from cats and dogs to hamsters and a lizard. Being in the United States Army, having cats as pets is much easier to take care of as opposed to having a dog as a pet. There are many reasons as to how I came to this decision, but the deciding factors were based upon bathroom use, feeding, and the amount of attention and time that both cats and dogs require. While these factors are not all inclusive they are just the ones that had the most impact on my decision when picking a type of a pet. I am currently watching my Soldiers dog while he and his wife are on leave in the United States and this is reinforcing how much easier military life is with a cat rather than a dog.

The closest animal shelter is in Eden NC. People do not need to waste gas money to go that far when we can have one in Madison. It would be a more convenient way for people to build the community stronger and to bring pets that are in need. If people would care just about aninals as much as they do with recycling in this world, people could put a stop to pet overpopulation. Over 8 million dogs and cats are killed each year in county shelters and humane societies. These unwanted pets are a result of irresponsible pet owners that allow their pets to breed and run free creating the problem of pet overpopulation. Many of these lost animals may end up on the laboratory table. Millions more lose their lives from starvation, disease, moving vehicles, and owner abuse. Puppies sold in pet shops are raised in "puppy mills," breeding kennels that house the dogs in cramped and filthy conditions. Females are bred until their bodies give out and then they are killed.
