I was a virgin and was raped by a man in his 20s that I trusted. After pressing charges, and him going to jail, I discovered I was pregnant. I cried for days before finally telling my mother. We decided that I had to have an abortion. I could not bear to have a child with the man who raped me, let alone bring a child into this world at the age of 14. No one near me would do the procedure. When we finally found a place that would, over an hour away, I went in for a consultation. I was met at the door by protesters. People screaming in my face, waving signs, telling me that what I was doing was wrong. As I walked down the hallway of my high school, I had people tormenting me, calling me a murderer, and other harsh names, and throwing things at me. Abortions have been performed for thousands of years. In the 1800s abortions began to be outlawed. The reasons for anti-abortion laws varied for each state. Some people did not want the world to be dominated by newly arrived immigrants. Abortion in the 1800s were very unsafe due to the fact that the doctors had a limited educations and hospitals were not common. The birth of a child is usually a wonderful and priceless occasion. However, on June 5, 2015, an eleven-year-old girl gave birth to a newborn girl. Approximately a year before she gave birth, her 40-year-old father repeatedly sexually assaulted her. In this case, the unprepared eleven-year-old child decided to have the baby. This is a prime example that illustrates that the right to abortion should always be vested in the woman.
Betty was only seventeen when she found out that she was pregnant. She and the father had been in a long term relationship, and had discussed having children of their own. However, when he found out that she was pregnant their relationship immediately changed. Suddenly he began to question her fidelity, and he accused her of being pregnant with another man’s baby. After his reaction, Betty decided not to tell anyone, especially because having a child out of wedlock was frowned upon. She began to search for an abortion clinic. She found one by looking through the telephone directory for gynecologists who did not advertise themselves as obstetricians. She went to meet the practitioner in a run-down shack in the middle of nowhere. Once Betty arrived, the practitioner immediately began the procedure. The method this practitioner used was a cervical puncture followed by an insertion of willow bark. Betty was given no pain medicine. After she left she began to bleed profusely and soon presented symptoms of an infection. Although the woman who performed the abortion told her not to come back, she did, and was given some painkillers. After a few days the infection appeared to have passed and her doctor told her she was no longer pregnant (Fadiman). Betty’s story is not a rare one. For some, abortion is a touchy subject like politics and religion. In America, abortion has always been a controversial topic of discussion. The Supreme Court in the case Roe vs Wade case set the way of guidelines and the right for women to have an abortion if she chooses. In 2015 abortions is still an ongoing debate amongst religious groups, politicians and normal citizens. People that are for the rights of women to abort are often criticized and ridiculed for standing up for their personal beliefs. There are people who have conditioned their minds to think that women should not be allowed to have abortions if she was not raped or a result of incest, which I strongly disagree with that type of thinking. When she arrived home to take the second pill, a few hours after she began suffering with severe cramps that felt like she was dying and experience heavy bleeding. There is a small amount of people who are nonchalant on the subject. Women have abortions for many different reasons and according to certain groups these reasons are either justified or not. Everyone tends to have their own articulated opinion, and many vocalize tenaciously what they believe. Pro-life individuals along with religion are sanguine that abortion is ethically and morally erroneous. Whereas those who are pro-choice say that abortion is inconsequential and the mother’s choice is more important than the fetus. The CDC (centers for disease control and prevention) reported 1,292,606 abortions in 1980. The number count continued by millions until the year 2000. Rates began to decrease, but the numbers still remained high. 2009 is the year CDC has recently given reports on the statistics of abortion in the United States. The ratio in that year has been 227 out of 1000 live births. 64% of abortions legally induced were performed at eight or fewer weeks during the gestation period. One of the most controversial issues in this day and age is the stance people take on abortion. The two main positions that people take are either of pro-choice or pro-life; both sides, although polar opposites, tend to refer to both the issue of morality and logical rationale. The pro-life side of the debate believes that abortion is an utterly immoral practice that should be abolished. On the contrary, abortion should remain a legal procedure because it is a reproductive right; its eradication would not only take away the pregnant person’s autonomy, but would also put more children in financially unstable homes and the adoption system, and would cause an increase in potentially fatal, unsafe abortions.
To be raped is to be sexually assaulted forcefully and unwillingly. According to the Uniform Crime reports, of all serious offenses, rape is probably “the most under reported crime.” Victims of rape are not only violated physically, they are violated mentally as well. It is a very traumatic experience that woman have to deal with for the remainder of their life. Those who oppose the idea (Pro-lifers), thinks it is an act of woman playing “God” who live from who dies. Yet, whether an unborn baby constitutes a normal person is questionable; a pregnant woman, on the other hand, has the undeniable right to choose whether she wants to have a child or not.
