Mariska Hargitay, founder of the Joyful Heart Foundation, “It’s a really screwed up world, but it’s not your fault, and what happened to you, it doesn 't make you the monster.” If you were sexually assaulted, it is not your fault. Sexual assault and rape awareness is not emphasized as much as it should be on college campuses. Most students think, “That will never happen to me”. Those are the students that don’t protect themselves or take extra precaution. Recently a sexual assault and a rape has been dealt with accordingly at Bowling Green State University. “Falcon Football Player Suspended for Two Years” is the headline you would find about nineteen year old student William Houston. Students should own some type of protectant, such as pepper spray or a type of stun gun. A canister of pepper spray costs, on average, $10. This pepper spray can be attached to your lanyard with the rest of your keys, making sure you have at least this form of protection with you at all times. The average cost of a flash light stun gun is $15, this is a newer form of protection. The device works as a flashlight for when students are walking across campus by themselves, but acts as a stun gun when a button is pushed for protection. Although, there are sexual sublevels of assault. Sexual imposition, sexual battery, public indecency, rape, sexual assault, sexual conduct, sexual contact, voyeurism, relationship violence, menacing by stalking and more are covered in the code of conduct. The handbook also gives you ways to go about reporting and filing a complaint of some sort and following through with that report legally. The university charges a $9 attorney fee to every student on and off campus in case of any of the students in need of legal advice or need to take legal action. Any sexual assault that happens on campus can and should be reported to the University Police Department, any sexual assault that happens off of the Bowling Green State University campus should be reported to the Bowling Green City Police. All victims of these crimes have the full cooperation of the university’s police force. The Bowling Green University Police Department acts just like any other region of policemen, allowing them to make any arrests on or off campus due to dual partnership with the Bowling Green City Police. If a student has been assaulted there are also resources on campus for dealing with the victims

One would think that with all these women being sexually assaulted, one would hear more about it, or perhaps the police stations would constantly be busy. This is not the case. Sexual assault is one of the most unreported crimes, with 68% still being left unreported (RAINN, 2016). This could be because of every 100 rapists, only 2 will spend a day in jail. Of the 32 out of 100 that would be reported, only 7 are referred to an arrest (RAINN, 2016).
