Whether it’s for a party, celebration, happiness, sadness, depression, relaxation, stress, no matter what you say there will be a reason to consume alcohol. According to the National Institute on Alcohol and Alcoholism, in 2013 87% of people 18 or older drank alcohol in life at least once. Half of whom are college students who binge drink. According to the National Institute on Alcohol and Alcoholism, in 2013, 60 percent of college students drank some sort of alcoholic beverage in the past month. With 39 percent who binge drank in the past month, lastly with 12.7 percent of whom heavy drank. There were times where I knew I didn’t have that much and I was safe to drive. Other times where I have drank a little too much to be driving, but at this point my judgment is impaired and am very confident to drive even though I’m in no shape too. One day my roommate flat out said something to me that stuck. He said basically that it doesn’t matter if your capable or not capable to drive it’s the fact if you get pulled over for any reason even for a broken taillight. You will get pulled over and if the officer smells the alcohol on your breath and makes you take a breathalyzer, it doesn’t matter if you were fine driving you passed the legal amount to drink and you will go to jail. I thought about it and how lucky I was to not get caught that night and to this day I never do it. I’m still in a college set environment so it is hard to stay away from it, so I’ve developed a plan that will keep me away from driving under the influence of alcohol. The night I go drinking I won’t even think about getting the wheel until I can find a designated driver. So I will have a designated driver beforehand so it’s confirmed. When traveling and staying safe from other drunk drivers on the road stay on the highway and not in rural areas. Less likely chance of an intoxicated river swerving from the oncoming lane onto yours for a guaranteed fatal crash. Make sure all airbags work in the car and avoid aggressive drivers. Worst case scenario that if you can’t find a designated driver before you go out on a night of drinking or a party besides not going. It’s to first understand and know you alcoholic limits and try to just sip and pace on your alcoholic beverages instead of gulping and chugging. Stay away from the peer pressure of binge drinking and just stick to what you can handle so you can make it back home safely and the other you may have brought along with you.
