From more than two thousand years ago, people put some fabric on their body to protection. It does not take so much time to come with message. People want be “different” or “standing out” from other and fashion is an easiest and most popular way to show your uniqueness. Children don 't get to express their own style. The clothes they wear, or the way they wear, but with dress codes that privilege is taken away. Also, without dress codes, you can keep up with the latest fashions or styles. People are often judged by appearance. You will be judged on what you wear, and imperfection about you, and you 'll be made fun of for being who you are. You can’t afford to think negatively about yourself due to some aspect of your appearance. Dress code enforces the modest dress of students, preventing bullying and distractions.Numerous people believe clothing is a distraction and when eliminated the school environment is more professional and gives a better education to a student. Authority figures consider the school apparel enforcements are constitutionally sound, not affecting the child’s right to freely express, and providing a professional and working setting causing a better learning environment and decreased amount of bullying due to clear differences in appearance. Hoerr starts of with a comment that was made to him about a young girl and what she was wearing. The comment referred to her undergarments. The author continues to explain the two points he learned, and because of those points, he made his school a casual place. The dress code he established only proclaims to be “neat and clean.” The author saw no problem until the attire came so close as to be dressing at the beach, so he conducted a meeting with his staff and decided something should be said. When the author wrote the work dress guidelines, he got the input of the teachers and what should be expected by each guideline. However, the author only sent out the draft to people who had worked with him for fifteen or more years, so the question arose that the world is changing and he needed opinions from younger teachers. When he received feedback, he was questioned on if some codes really made a difference, and he made some changes. Next Hoerr tells his readers that when they give a restriction on something, they must have a rational reason why. Hoerr’s reason was that the school staff needed to have a professional experience, which make since because some students might not take their teacher seriously if he or she is dressed for bed. Dress code, probably one of the most talked about topics by teenagers. Most teenagers believe that dress code is “witless” or “incompetent”. Why do we think this? Well, most adults believe that keeping a strict dress code keeps us educated because apparently our clothes are “distracting”. Now I can see how wearing booty shorts and a tank top would be distracting, but how is wearing sweatpants distracting? If anything wearing sweatpants keeps us comfortable, because I know that being uncomfortable is way more distracting than wearing sweatpants. When I wear sweatpants I can lay back and relax while the teacher talks, but if I am uncomfortable I am more likely to move around and fidget with my clothes rather than listen to the lesson.

It was official in 2005; the Lima City Schools board of education adopted a new dress code policy. This policy would be used to crack down on the unruly students who refused to follow the already lenient rules. “With a stricter dress code, students will focus more on school than looking at other students, said Suzanne Helm, a Victoria resident.” (Cavazos, 1). Lima City School District, like the Victoria school district located in Texas, spent many hours designing the new dress code policy. This new policy will test if the way students dress effects their behavior and the way that they learn.

Parents and their children are constantly arguing about the way students dress in school. This debate has become a national conversation which has been going on for more than a decade. However, there still hasn’t been a final resolution. The questions “Why do I have to wear the uniform today?” or “Can I wear this t-shirt because the color matches with my school t-shirt?” have become part of our everyday lives. Choosing what to wear for the day. This is what most students are thinking about when they wake up. From the way that they run programs at public schools, to the way that have their students wear school uniforms. Many will argue that having students wear uniforms take away some of their rights and restrict students from freedom of expression; But when it comes down to it, is their freedom of expression really being taken away? Or are parents and students just over reacting because they aren’t getting what they want?
A student’s high school career should be about discovering new knowledge and discovering who you are, not about what you wore. One rule that I would change at Ralston is the dress code policy. The dress code policy limits a student's right to express themselves, be comfortable in what they wear and ultimately put a higher value some students over others.
