Do you ever think about how the products we use are tested to know they are safe? Everything from soap and cleaner to bandaids and kleenex has to be tested before the use on humans. The way that people decided to handle this issue, is to use animals. Animal testing is a real problem. Many animals are getting severely injured testing products for humans to use. I personally believe that animal testing should be banned. There are many alternatives to testing products that don’t require animals. Innocent animals should not be used as our ‘guinea pigs’.
Many countries around the world have banned animal testing. “The United States is one of only two countries in the world whose government openly permits it.” (ALDF). Most of the products we use …show more content…

They would have chemicals forced down their throats and dripped into their eyes and onto their shaved skin. For cosmetic testing they would normally use a skin or eye irritation test. Another test that they use repeated oral force feeding. Studies using this method can last weeks or months. When using this method they would force animals to swallow what every they are testing whether it is soap, cleaner, etc. They use this test to look for signs of general illness or specific health hazards, such as cancer or birth defects. Another test that is used is called lethal dose. During this test animals are forced to swallow massive amounts of a test chemical to determine the what dosage would cause death. When people think about animal testing, they don’t think about the lasting effects on the animals. In 1966, they tried to control the problem by passing the Animal Welfare Act. This enacted standards to govern the humane handling, care, treatment and transportation of animals by dealers, research facilities and exhibitors. The AWA protects rabbits, guinea pigs, dogs, cats, chimps and monkeys, but excludes mice, rats, birds, cold-blooded animals or animals farmed for food like cows, pigs, chickens, which make up almost 90 percent of all animals used for cosmetic tests. If many other countries can ban animal testing the United States can too. The U.S. is one of the most powerful countries in the world. Animal testing should also be banned because it creates unreliable results. No matter how many tests they perform on animals, someone will always have to be the first human if is tested on. The fact that animal testing is so unreliable, makes human trials just as risky. “The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said that 92 percent of all drugs that are shown to be safe and effective in animal tests fail in human trials because they don’t work or are dangerous. The small amount of drugs that are approved for human use, end up being relabeled because of side effects that were not identified in tests on animals.”
