The Federal Government has announced it will accept 12,000 extra refugees affected by conflict in Syria and Iraq. This additional quota is on top of the existing 13,750 places already set aside for this financial year. Because of the existence of potential risks such as crimes, terrorism and government spending, some people refuse to intake the refugees while the others are arguing about humanism. Traditionally, first-world countries and their citizens assist those in less developed countries. Many of the island nations in the south pacific suffer from poverty and frequent natural disasters. Most would agree that, as the most developed country in the region, it is Australia’s responsibility to advocate for human rights and contribute to humanitarian efforts for the island nations. To its credit, Australia normally satisfies this role. However, when asylum-seekers come by boat, Australia draws a forceful line. The United States is also tasked with protecting its borders, but takes a more appropriate approach. In 2012, the PEW research
Christopher McCandless’ long, fascinating, but an ultimately fatal journey into the wilderness of Alaska is depicted in the biography, Into the Wild, written by Jon Krakauer. Late in the of summer of 1990, a very young Christopher McCandless left his ordinary world in Annandale, Virginia to pursue a solitary life in the untamed wilds of Alaska. Many will insinuate that Christopher McCandless’ actions were childish and idiotic, but a stronger argument would be that his unconventional thinking and desire to live life on his own terms allowed him to reach self-actualization.
In 2005 the Migration Amendment Act was introduced which relates to the notion that children must only be put in detention centres as a matter of last resort to ensure the safety of children as there had been many concerns from the Members of parliament. This new policy had given the opportunity for many children and their families to be released into community detention centres whereby there is higher security to ensure their protection. However, in Australia there had still been a substantial amount of children that had still been held in detention centres and often for lengthy periods. Although the Australian Government had attempted to comply with the new policy by gradually allowing children and their families to be released into the community

Illegal immigration should be allowed because their quality of life is improved, they help the economy, and they bring job growth.

There are a number of ways in which the issue of immigration is connected to social justice and equity in rich and democratic nations like Australia. The main implications of this issue is that Australia’s migration policy is unjust for the refugees entering Australia. Australia’s justice system is one of the systems thought to be open for everyone. However, this is not the case for immigrants as they may not have the same access to the justice systems as those given to people of the host country.
Australia boasts an admirable history of involvement with the United Nations, being one of its founding members in 1945, as well as drafting, and assenting to, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. However, despite these notable humanitarian endeavours, Australia’s treatment of minority groups, namely Aboriginals and asylum seekers, has been anything but humane. Australia’s praiseworthy association with the United Nations, and its efforts in peace-keeping operations, are belied by degrading treatment of its Indigenous populace, and callous conduct towards asylum seekers.
