The world has already lost millions of species, and if something does not change it will lose millions more. Zoos have been around for thousands of years, archaeologist uncovered a zoo from the ancient egyptian times, although they have not always been for good reasons like they are today. Animals deserve the zoos that are available today because they can protect them in so many ways. Zoos are very important, not only do they provide a home but they protect animals from danger, keep them healthy at all times, provide education for all ages, and can help repopulate a diminishing species.

William Hornaday, director of the Bronx Zoo at the dawn of the 1900s, went to the West, captured the last of the wild bison and bred them in New York Most say that there wouldn’t be bison in this country if that had not happened ("Idaho Zoo Powers”). He not only saved the bison but he bred them and repopulated the species, and that was just one man who had an idea and a zoo. Greg Carr was a philanthropist who made it his living to save animals, after he gained a fortune he donated parts of his riches to helping animals. Zoos help people as well, they create jobs and opportunities for those who qualify, Carr states “And I thought, ‘Wow, if we restore the park, we restore nature.’ We’re saving the treasure — the national symbol of this country — but we’ll create jobs, and I like the kind of jobs we create,” (Jones). Zoos breed animals most of the time, but animals born in captivity behave very different than those born in the wild. When an animal is born in captivity it can no longer go back into the wild, but zoos are more than happy to take them. Animals born in captivity should not be put back into the wild, the foreign land is too much for them and means almost certain death. “I truly think that zoos and aquariums in the United States could be the biggest source of revenue for wildlife conservation in the world,” said Steve Burns, chairman-elect of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (Jones). Facilities like zoos and aquariums really do protect their animals in a way that makes them like the military of the animals, but extremely less violent. Zoos are really one of the only ways to keep animals protected. The zoo's will take care of them and keep them from getting poached or killed for pelts, ivory, bones, etc. While the zoos are protecting the animals in their facilities, they also are making a stand to help protect more animals in the wild. In 2007 Boise, a zoo in the US, started adding a quarter onto the ticket price that went towards saving animals everywhere. Boise raised up to 1.2 million dollars for conservation projects and helped animals from the southern idaho ground squirrel to the zebras and lions in africa (Jones). This is significant because imagine if all the zoos started to do this, over one hundred million dollars would be raised and would go to supporting wild animals everywhere. The best part is most already do that. Zoos all over raise money for conservation, the 228 facilities that are apart of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums donated over 150 million to wildlife conservation (Jones).
