Why Americans Don’t Vote

Did you know that more people in the United States check their Facebook and watch the superbowl than exercise their right to vote? It’s true! The cause of this surprising data is because Americans don’t know the history behind voting and why it is so important. Unlike other countries where dictators and monarchs make the decisions on behalf of the people, Americans have the right to decide who runs the country and what laws should govern the citizens. While having the privilege to vote, many Americans choose to not vote for reasons such as registration requirements, limited number of political parties, the belief that their vote won’t actually count, and for some, simple apathy. One of the number one reasons why Americans do not vote is because of the registration requirements. Voting is a process and there are requirements to do so. People who go to vote must be citizens of the United States, meet the state’s residency requirements, be registered to vote, be eighteen years or older, and have some sort of identification etc. When …show more content…

America is full of many different types of people with many different views and opinions, thus making it more difficult to cast their vote for one of two parties, democratic or republican. The majority of presidential candidates are difficult to like on a personal level; however when it comes to voting, sometimes the best a person can do is to ask themselves, “Which of these candidates is the lesser of two evils?” Sometimes the voter is simply voting against a particular candidate, not necessarily for a particular candidate. Having to choose between two candidates with views that may not be agreeable can be frustrating; however, choosing the lesser of two evils is still an important and effective way for Americans to voice their opinion about the subjects they care about
