“If you want to have a life that is worth living, a life that expresses your deepest feelings and emotions and cares and dreams, you have to fight for it”(Walker Quotes). In The Color Purple by Alice Walker there are many characters that stand out, however, the main focus of the entire story is Celie and the progression of her as a person. Walker at first portrays Celie as this innocent, incompetent little girl that can not stand up to anyone or anything, even if it meant saving her life. However, as time progresses, Celie, with the help of some friends along the way becomes this strong, independent woman who learns to stand up for herself. However, at times people wish to have the same characteristics as someone else or have the urge to appear as that person. In Alice Walker’s The Color Purple we see a comparison of two main characters. Walker compares innocent, incompetent Celie to strong, independent Sophia.”Sophia knock the man down”(Walker 87). Sophia stood up for herself by not letting the mayor and his wife tell her what she should be doing with her life,she was definitely was not going to be anybody’s maid. No person today views women as someone to look down to anymore. Women have earned their spot in world. Thanks to the women in our past, we the future have the power to control our lives. Alice Walker’s book The Color Purple really makes the reader understand that no one should take what comes easily to us now for granted. Yesterday that is something they fought for. Walker uses the main character Celie as an example of someone who fought for her life. Walker portrays Celie as a women during the time period who has absolutely nothing,no rights at all.
