The concept of lake-effect snow is rather simple. It starts when cold arctic air from Canada moves southwest across the great lakes, which are warmer than the air. As the air moves across the lakes evaporation occurs. The moist air is cooled as it is lifted up and then turned into snow. This snow does not stop until the cold arctic winds stop drifting across the lakes. Hills and valleys on the shore of the lakes intensify the amount of snow an area receives. The shore of the lakes as well as, any hills or valleys, cause the masses of moist air to slow down and “pile up”.

The remodeling also includes the building of one new chair lift, the addition of new ski runs, maintenance work on three existing chair lifts, lighting for night time skiing, the creation of a half pipe, the addition of a snow play area for families, the improvement of service facilities/infrastructure, and a cultural center for native Americans. If it were not for Wayne Pierce and his great invention, the Arizona SnowBowl would not even be able to consider these improvements. The improvements would not be plausible without a consistent ski season, which a snow machine can deliver.

A few winters ago, some friends invited my family and me to go snow skiing at Paoli Peaks, Indiana. I did not know how to snow ski, and I leaped at the thought of trying this new sport. On the first morning we entered the pro shop to rent all the gear and make decisions about whether or not to take lessons or go it alone. We decided to be adventurous and go it alone—no lessons. Kent and Celeste, the friends who invited us, knew how to ski and snowboard. He assured us that he could show us the basics, and we would be on our way down the slopes. Some users claim that the snow factory is the snowmaking of the future, because of how efficient the snow factory is. However, TechnoAlpin states on their website that this is “not intended as a substitute for conventional snow production but is more of an addition to the existing snowmaking applications and technologies.” ("Snowfactory By Technoalpin, Snowmaking At Warm Temperatures"). Currently the main reason snow factories are not being used a lot is because of the price. The average price of the snow factory is about half a million dollars, and the average price for a fan gun is $40,000 (Minde). That’s $500,000 spent on one “snow gun” that cannot be moved versus spending $40,000 on a fan gun that can be moved. Even if money is not a true issue for some mountains it is still more beneficial to use traditional snowmaking, because in order for an entire mountain to be covered with snow there would have to be a lot of snow factories spread out all over the mountain. That also brings up another problem which is that most mountains do not have enough space to put a big cargo container between trails. As the car is driven, the gasoline fumes that are released from the car contribute to the other many factors and pollutants that damage the environment. Not only is the purchase now a contributor to the depletion of clean air, but it could also play a part in the depletion of someone’s health. For example, asthma or bronchitis could develop in an adult or child as a direct result of breathing in noxious automotive fumes. Depending on where one lives, there could be strict regulations on air pollution. One must be accountable for any and all contributions made to the demise of what was once a healthy Earth. One must be accountable for his or her own carbon footprint. Some individuals have taken steps to reduce their carbon footprints and cause less harm to the environment by purchasing electric cars.
