Self-Driving cars are no longer a figment of science fiction. This innovated technology has been in the testing stages for some time, but recently people have been wondering, “How much will automated cars really benefit our lives?” It’s obvious that self-driving cars will help reduce traffic wrecks and death caused by human error, but what’s not so obvious is the side effects of introducing these cars. It’s predicted that they will cause a decline in our economy, as well as an increase in driver disengagement. Although self-driving cars will help road safety conditions, they should not be introduced to the general public due to the major problems that can domino from their release. In Text 4, this situation is addressed; “Drivers who put too much trust in automation may become overly reliant on it, overestimating what the system can do for them” (Text 4, Lines 12-13). Gerald Matthews, a psychologist at the University of Central Florida, further discussed the issues by stating, that when “detached from the activity of driving, most people soon begin to experience ’passive fatigue’” (Text 4, Lines 31-32). In other words, the drivers aren’t devoting their attention to driving independently, given that they trust the automated system will do what it is designed to do. Some dissidents argue that self-driving cars can lead to complacency and facility in driving (Text 4, Line 10), however, to disprove, that statement is not true about everyone, and self-driving cars need to be catered to everyone’s specific behavior and preferences (Text 4, Line 42). In summary, for some, automatic vehicles may lead to facility in driving, but to many more, this facility will lead to driver disengagement, and furthermore traffic accidents, with a still relatively new
