The American citizen, a person who lives in the land of the free and the home of the brave, hardly understands the extent of what that freedom extends to. Just how free is free? Some states have laws that are there to keep the people from committing atrocious crimes; while others have restrictions that extend for pages in a book of law. What is legally considered self-defense and what is assault? What is legal in self-defense with a firearm? To what extent do citizens’ rights protect from intrusion of the law? With all this confusion, how are American citizens to know what is right from wrong? An officer can walk up to a house and knock on the door, but legally cannot enter without permission or a warrant. Self-defense is “the right to prevent suffering force or violence through the use of a sufficient level of counteracting force or violence.” When translated into layman’s terms it means when being attacked a person has the right to fight back with the same level of force. This does not mean, if a man starts to hit another man, the first man has the right to mortally wound his assailant. The third paragraph in Section 5-2-606 of the law reads,
“A person 's use of physical force upon another person is justifiable if the person in good faith withdraws from the encounter and effectively communicates to the other person his or her purpose to withdraw from the encounter; and the other person continues or threatens to continue the use of unlawful physical force; or the physical force involved is the product of a combat by agreement not authorized by …show more content…

No one is above the law. Those who break it shall be punished to the fullest extent of the law. The United States was based on an idea, an idea to let the people control themselves. Laws were put into place to protect not only ourselves but also others around us. The law is important, more so to the extent that we as Americans shall not do heinous things against one another. Speed limits were put into place to keep all motorists safe on the roads. If a man was speeding and he hit another car, which had a pregnant woman driving and killed her, how would people react? The people would be outraged. Speed traps would have a significant increase in occurrence. The driver that killed the other driver would not be able to forgive themselves, assuming they are not a sadist, and would be in jail for vehicular and negligent manslaughter. The law was made to protect, officers were put in place to enforce the law, and the people are to understand the law. There is absolutely no reason anybody should disobey laws meant to protect a human life. Total disregard for the law, or breaking it with intent and malice should result in complete termination. Not cops, soldiers, citizens, government officials, senators, congressmen, nor The President are above the law. No American soul is above the law. The law was placed by the founders of this country, and that law brought this country to where we Americans stand
