High school students have an average of 3.1 hours of homework each night (qtd. in Parker). Homework takes up a big chunk of high school students’ time every night, therefore, the big question is, does homework help? Many educational researchers have studied this topic for over seventy years; however, there is still a huge debate over the value of homework (Cooper et al. 4). Nevertheless, there are many studies that have been done with high school homework and plenty of growing evidence that homework is useful when used properly (Marzano and Pickering 74). While homework may be a timing problem, homework benefits high school students because homework improves in-school achievement and teaches many life skills out of school. All those skills, in the sentence above, students will need as they go through high school and beyond. Homework also teaches students how to manage their time wisely (Cooper 86). In other words, students have more than just homework to do when the school bell rings, and in their future life they will have more than their job to look after, so learning how to manage time early will help in the future. Homework may also help students explore topics of their own interests (Marzano and Pickering 79). In addition to exploring students’ interests, students may find a new interest through homework by doing a research paper or having to read an assigned book. Homework is a tremendous boost for developing skills for beyond the …show more content…
Whenever high school students get a homework overload, it may lead the students to sleep deprivation and other health problems (Parker). In addition, when students start running out of time to do their homework they start to get stressed. Fifty-six percent of students considered homework a primary source of stress (Parker). Likewise, thirty-three percent of students put pressure to get good grades in a category of stress (Parker). When a student is only focusing on getting good grades they do not learn as much and thus, do not benefit from the homework as much. Homework can make students have health problems when teachers do not use it properly. Homework should not lead to health problems. When a student has homework, they should plan ahead on how they are going to get it done. Athletics should not be a problem because at most schools coaches say academics before athletics so, if it comes down to it, students would be able to skip practice to get their homework done. Once the student manages his time to where he has a homework schedule, he will not be stressed. Thus, when a student is not having stress he will sleep better. Students need to manage their time for homework so it does not lead to health
More than 70 percent of students have said that they have stress caused by homework
To much homework may cause more harm than good. In my sophomore year being a student-athlete was a huge challenge. I would drown in homework every single night after getting home from basketball practice at 5. I would stay up until 1 a.m doing all my homework, when I would get tired I would plead with my sister to help me finish my homework I had left to do. I became stressed with 7 hours of school and then 2 hours of basketball practice and then spending all night working on my assignments. I would go to school exhausted and in fear of how much homework I would receive that day. This new school year as a junior, I chose to challenge myself even more with honor classes, leadership, and an AP class. I knew this year would bring upon more challenges then the previous year, since I had never taken an AP class. I decided to give up basketball because it was taking up too much time off my homework which would deprive me from sleep. Basketball was a sport I dreamed of playing for the rest of my school high school years. I dreamed of being recognized by my coach as “Dulce Melo a center-forward that has been playing since freshman year, who has improved so much, and trained so hard to become part of the girls Polytechnic Basketball team.” I had given up on that dream, I was no longer part of the schools student-athlete association I was just a student. I shattered a dream I had worked so hard for and dreamed of since I was small because of the new up-coming homework loads that were going to come my way. Many students like myself are spending all evening and sometimes night, doing homework. Many teachers give too much homework, and often teachers do not coordinate the quantity given. To much homework can lead to deprivation in leisure act...
High school is another vast world where one can explore the depths of the teenage experience: the hell that lies in the dark, bottomless abyss and the ominous heaven with everlasting light and everything else in between. On top of this perpetual rollercoaster of emotions, there’s this other dark force that looms over the head of every student, the beast that devours all happiness in life: homework. Assignments can be tedious and are stacked on top of a student’s busy lifestyle, leading to sleepless nights and weariness. Homework causes an epidemic of stress and sleep deprivation resulting in overwhelming fatigue and ultimately deemed unneccessary for success.
When you think about school one of the first things that pops into people’s mind is homework. Basically if you have asked your parents or your grandparents they would say that they remember the homework load. Now we all know that homework can be beneficial but also can be very unhealthy with all of the stress that it causes. Over the years the homework load has increased because of the fact that schools think that they need to try to keep up with other countries in academics. And will doing all of this homework now be all for nothing later? The homework load has increased these past couple of years and it is causing a lot of stress on kids and overall is not helping their academics in the long run.
Junior high school students' achievement continued to improve with increased homework until assignments took between one and two hours a night. More homework than this was not accompanied by improved achievement” (Cooper, 1994).In his study he also had multiple tables that explained issues such as the positives and negatives of homework, factors that affect homework, recommended homework policies for districts, schools, and teachers.
Did you know that the average high school student in today’s society has the same levels of anxiety as a psychiatric patient in the 1950s? According to psychologist Robert Leahy, school these days can get a little tough– especially when most students’ first response to a heavy backpack full of homework is to worry over whether or not it can be done. In the past decade, Leahy and other psychologists have noticed a steady nationwide increase in the amount of stress caused by schoolwork among high school students (Slate Magazine). What does this mean for tomorrow’s leaders and future generations of dignitaries? Scientists have concluded that sleep deprivation, long-term health problems, and declining overall academic achievement are lasting effects of homework-related stress on the average student, and they should not be ignored.
A focused and involved high school student is one of the most hard working individuals in the education system. High school brings many challenges, like homework, working, and extracurricular activities, to the path of a hard working student, but more than likely help is available and the challenge is overcome. Although such challenges are a part of a high school student’s everyday life, they may be time consuming. Students may have long work hours, multiple assignments of homework, and extracurricular activities that take up the remaining hours of the day after school is dismissed. In a survey shared by Allie Bidwell, an education reporter of the U.S. News & World Report, the average of 1000 teachers reports on the amount of homework assigned
Homework in eighth grade is a very disagreed upon topic. People argue whether it is beneficial or a waste of time. Some say that homework is useful to students’ grades and gives the students non-academic benefits, while many parents and students say that homework is stressful and not essential. Homework creates stress for families, is superfluous, is too challenging for some students, and there’s little evidence to prove that it has academic benefits. Homework is a waste of time because it provides few benefits.
One of the reasons homework should be banned is because of the unnecessary stress and strain it creates for students. Many students are left pulling their hair out at homework time. Students struggle with homework for different reasons. Some of which are because they do not understand the assigned homework, or they are not being challenged, and quite possibly because they have hit their daily threshold for learning and have no more to give. Furthermore, students who struggle academically will likely require extra assistance to do their homework. Students are therefore tasked with finding a qualified person to assist them with homework. Students are not only under the stress of homework, but now they are under additional stress to find a qualified person that can assist them. Unfortunately, some students may not be able to obtain the help they need with their homework. Consequently and to no fault of their own their grades may be affected inaccurat...
Is homework beneficial or harmful? Homework expands everyone’s understanding and prepares them for the future, but it becomes very tough and stressful. Some people argue that homework takes away family time and is the root to stress which could have side effects on health especially for middle school students, whereas others argue that homework is a significant part of the learning procedure and helps build life skills. Homework has its position when it comes to learning, getting better grades in high school, challenging , while it could be stressful and tedious. At the end, the question originates, “Should homework be assigned to middle school students?”
In today’s world, education is more important than ever, and with education comes homework. However, many teachers give too much homework, which makes students extremely stressed. In addition, some are into sports or after school activities, and some have part time jobs they have to work at, which adds additional stress to the already overworked students. Mounds of homework can cause students to be under so much stress that it affects them mentally, physically, and emotionally. Stress can make students sick with colds, stomach aches, high blood pressure, sleep disorders, and/or anxiety disorders (Menninger and Dugan).
Kralovec, author of The End of Homework argues that doing homework during high school has little or no effect on successful study skills of students in college. College students have only a few hours of class a week and lots of daytime hours in which to study. She says the college schedule is nowhere as grueling as in high school. In addition, the average adult does not return home from the office with three or more hours of work to complete (Kralovec). When "busy work" assignments are given carelessly and frequently, it causes students to lose interest in the subject. Negative results can also occur when a student is not able to complete his or her homework. Many times they will resort to copying homework, having others do their assignments, or cheating on tests. Bad habits such as these are likely to follow kids through their lives and have an effect on their moral judgment. With no consequences to these actions students will almost always take the easy way out when it comes to homework
Although homework may seem like drudgery, the hard work that is put into homework may pay off in the long run. In the article, “Does homework really work for students?” Jacqueline Carey, the mother of seventh grade student Micah Carey, stated that “homework gives [students] a good foundation for when they move on further in school” (Johnson). Not only that but according to Donyall Dickey, principle at Murray Hill Middle School, “if students do not acquire things in class, they will acquire them through homework” (Johnson). As we can see homework helps and prepares us for higher grade levels while in primary school that can possibly prepare us for college. It also helps us to remember the materials that were taught in class. Another reason homework can be beneficial is the fact that it can prepare us for tests and the dreadful pop-quiz that a teacher may randomly give us. This fact was proven, according to a 2006 study by Harris Cooper, director of Duke University’s Program in education, in the article “Homework or Not? That is the (Research) Question”. The studies instituted that “students who had homework performed better on class tests compared to those who did not” (DeNisco). Another compelling thing about homework, are the qualities a skills th...
Harris Cooper, a researcher on homework from Duke University, claims that too much homework causes stress. In this I paper will talk about the damaging effects homework has on a child, how homework causes students to dropout of school, and some ideas for an alternative to homework.
Homework offers multiple benefits for real life. One benefit of homework is that it helps the student develop essential skills. While homework may seem like a tedious task, it can help a student comprehend the material. Homework is necessary for more than just a grade; it is an assignment that teaches you valuable life skills. According to “Do students have too much homework?”, homework should lead students to be better at taking what they know and applying it to a certain task. Students tend to portray homework as something that they have to get done without knowing the value that lies behind it. Homework enables the student to recall a certain problem and apply it to another distinctive situation. According to “Do students have too much homework?”, applying knowledge is the most important. Learning is definitely important but what students do with the facts that they learned is essential as well. Applying knowledge allows the students to take a simple fact and relate it to a grander scheme of things. Relating what they know will enhance their creativity and let them see behind the lines of how everything connects.
