This paper will discuss the prison gang issue that exists in our correctional system. It will list several powerful gangs that populate the prison and jails around the country. Descriptions of the gangs will be given along with their history and courses of action they take to maintain discipline within its culture. From the criminal justice side the discussion will cover issues of safety, temptation and corruption that happen when dealing with the various gangs. Finally this paper will propose some personal solutions I think would help ease some of the issues correction officers and those in the criminal justice system have to deal with daily. Prison Gangs: A College Profile The prison gangs that exist in the United States are a major concern for all those involved in the criminal justice system. From the humble beginnings in 1950 with the Gypsy Jokers Gang, to modern day entities like the Aryan Brotherhood, gangs have grown to numbers in the tens of thousands and are at times out of control (Orlando-Morningstar, 1997) Through the use of assault, bribery, intimidation, and murder, the gangs have become a powerful force inside and outside of prison. Law enforcement officers today have the tremendous task of arresting and maintaining discipline of these offenders once locked away in jail or prison. It is paramount that the correctional officers that are in charge of overseeing these criminals maintain the standards and are strong willed and trustworthy. The gangs inside have their own rules and laws that they abide by. The correctional officers must use the rules and laws that govern the system to keep peace and order, because with this chaos and anarchy will reign supreme. Only through tough changes that will take dedicated professionals in the correction system can make a difference. The economic factor plays a vital role in these changes because without money there will be no additional assistance to change this culture and mindset. There will be no analyzing of why this young person is in prison so they can be a part of something that only cares about that next dollar. With the proper specialist to exam and reconstruct the lives of those that want a change, change can be had. Weeding out the corrupt officials is urgent for any of these changes to occur. They are the connection point with the gang members and set the tone for those that might need a hand to turn their life around.
