A symbol of chivalry and valor, big game hunting has always been portrayed as one of the most noble sports that a man can partake in. But on the brink of extinction, many dwindling wildlife populations are starting to see the last of their kind walking the face of the earth and if we don’t dramatically reduce the threat of big game hunting, we might as well consider some species already extinct. Although many people have established arguments in which big game hunting actually preserves wildlife, the dramatic decline in the population of big game species says otherwise. This takes a larger toll on the lion population since many next generation cubs are slaughtered during the power struggles of the pride and it makes it even more difficult for the lion population to recover. This decrease in wildlife population hasn’t been recent, it has been going on for centuries, ever since the rise of big game hunting. For example, National Geographic, one of the largest nonprofit educational and scientific institutions in the world says, “approximately 200,000 lions inhabited the African continents 100 years ago, Only around 30,000 remain today.” This detail is significant because such a rapid decline in the lion population cannot be blamed on any natural phenomena like famine, drought, or ice age. The only real threat to the lion population in the past 100 years has been big game hunters. The sport became a most popular past time to rich americans and europeans in the late 19th and early 20th century and it still is a very popular sport
