When you adopt an animal from a rescue organization, you are actually saving two lives: the animal you adopt and the one taking his place. Adopting an animal from a shelter could save him from euthanasia and frees up shelter space for more animals. According to the ASPCA, roughly 1.5 million animals in shelters are euthanized every year because of lack of space. This is because some people are still buying their animals from pet stores or breeders.
