Many animals enter animal shelters without any hope of leaving. Every single day dogs and cats are being given to shelters across the country. Only about 25% of dogs and 24% of cats are adopted, 15% are reunited with their owners, and a horrible 64% are euthanized. That means there are millions of animals being killed just because no one wants them. 56 percent of dogs and 71 percent of cats that enter animal shelters are euthanized. More cats are euthanized than dogs because they are more likely to enter a shelter without any owner identification. Some dogs that enter the shelter are either too aggressive and hostile to be adopted or too ill to be helped, so they are put down, but most of the dogs that enter a shelter are lovable and adoptable …show more content…

The ultimate goal is to reduce the number of healthy adoptable animals being euthanized to zero and create a balance where there is the same number of adoptable animals as people looking to adopt. There’s obviously a long way to go before this can be accomplished, but there are many different ways people are striving towards it. Some of the animal shelters have started a no-kill policy, meaning that they will find a home for every single healthy and adoptable animal in the shelter, not a single animal will be unnecessarily put down . This is a big achievement, and hopefully there will be even more shelters who will take on this no-kill policy. There are also people trying to stop the uncontrolled breeding of animals and instead promote adoptions from shelters that are overcrowded and full of healthy adoptable animals. Another problem causing an extreme excess of animals is puppy mills. The dogs in these mills are locked up in small cages all day with barely any food or water let alone human interaction. They are dirty and undernourished and the mill owners breed solely for profit with no interest in the well-being of the animals. Many animals in pet stores are acquired from puppy mills so make sure to do some research before buying the first cute animal you see in a store window.
