Imagine sitting in circus and an elephant gets loose and runs straight into the crown, yes this can really happen. The animal’s in many cases are treated horribly, mostly in situations like circuses. The animal’s health is in danger. Also the animals can become dangerous. There is no guarantee that these things don’t happen to animals all over. So overall these animal entertainment attractions (zoos, circuses, marine parks, and aquariums) should be changed or even shut down.
There are innocent animals being treated horrible everyday at circuses, marine parks, and zoos. Animals like elephants and tigers were not made to do things like jump through hoops and stand on their heads (circuses). Think about it this way, are humans supposed to walk

As Aquariums and Marine animals states “Marine animals like orcas and dolphins navigate using echolocation, but in tanks the sounds bounce off the walls and really annoy them and mess up their navigation.” Things like this destroy an animal. These animals go insane. Imagine not being able to see, and there is a bunch of people talking around you this would drive anyone insane. It’s not fair to do this to animals. Travel conditions really affect the animal's health. Mostly in circuses while traveling the conditions are usually horrible. Lots of times circus animals are kept in cages with no water or food (Circuses). If this was in a house the people would have been fined for animal abuse why is this any different? In many occurrences animals in these cases die prematurely. According to Aquariums and Marine Parks “according to research they die a lot faster, most orcas in the wild can live up the 100 years, but in captivity they average only around 9 years until they die” and also “At least 44 orcas have died at U.S. SeaWorld facilities from causes ranging from severe trauma to intestinal gangrene; not one has died of old age.” It’s unfair to have innocent animals die at such a young age instead of a full life. Do you know that if you buy a pet from a pet store, there will be some animals die in the shelters? Do you also know that every year there are thousands of sheltered animals are euthanized—mercy killing— because there is no space for them? Many people buy pets rather than adopt from shelters because they think they are healthy, purebred and well-behaved. But actually the sheltered animals may be healthier, happier and much cheaper. In the recent years, more and more people decide to adopt animals since there are numerous advantages such as changing a homeless animal’s whole life, reducing illegal trade and puppy farms and benefiting from long- term advice and support.
An excited crowd waits expectantly to see the horse, cowboy, and calf burst out of the chute. Within seconds, the cowboy has the calf roped, on the ground, and tied. The action appears effortless. Two wranglers release the calf, and it trots out of the arena, seemingly unharmed. The question remains, are rodeos humane? That does the calf think of all this excitement? Contrary to what many people assume, PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association) sanctioned rodeos treat their livestock humanely.
SeaWorld presents itself as a family establishment full of fun “educational” activities. However, these activities harm animals physically and emotionally.

SeaWorld, circuses, and other facilities that force animal behavior for entertainment are cruel and should not be allowed to continue their businesses. Tricia Kenney’s opinion that “...zoos and aquariums, for the most part, try to recreate a natural environment for the animals and, more importantly, don't disrespect them by having them perform all day long and do things that are completely unnatural for them,” is the exact answer to the question that asks why parents believe zoos/ aquariums are acceptable, while circus and places like SeaWorld are not. Caging any animal into a room with 4 tight walls is incredibly small compared to their natural habitat. Like Pilar Clark said, “places where animals are made to perform for enjoyment of humans,” should be a place where parents don’t take their kids. Lets start with zoos, where animals are kept in cages or large enclosures for public viewing. Millions of people visit zoos thinking the animals are happy, when in all reality they are miserable. You can try to replicate the animals enclosure to their natural habitat, but they can never replace their homes. An animals rights organization states, “Animals are often prevented from doing most of the things that are natural and important to them, like running, roaming, flying, climbing, foraging, choosing a partner, and being with others of their own kind,” (PETA). Although, zoos are said to ‘help’ these animals, they really are not, it is more a collection of different animals in order to show off to the audience and gain money off of them. People begin to believe it is okay to keep these wild animals captive and have their lives be controlled by someone else.
For thousands of years scientist have been performing vivisections on animals to find information on new chemicals, drugs, and vaccines. Vivisection is when scientist perform dissections among living animals mostly for the purpose of educating and retrieving information. Experimenting on animals has become the tool that has helped us comprehend the body functions of an animal and how a disease transforms the bodily functions, but over the years it’s caused animal rights activists to question the usefulness and the sincerity of using animals for this purpose. Well I’ve been there twice and once I even got to witness backstage and firsthand that they do not abuse the animals. People often like to bring up the fact that the killer whales have well killed some trainers before. And I’m not going to downplay it. It happened. But there is always risk when handling animals. I own a dog. My dog has bit me before. There was blood. Does this mean I abuse my dog? I love her and feed her and have never once abused her? No. And no one has even accused me of abuses my dog even though she has bit me. It is the same with these whales. They are called killer whales for crying out loud. You wake up in the hospital, look around, and find a doctor hovering nearby declaring that you have just suffered through a heart attack; affirming that if not for your dog, you would have died. You remember back to earlier that day: sitting on the couch, feeling a little off, hearing your dog barking, sensing him nudging you, going to the phone to call the ambulance, and having your dog by your side until you were safe inside the aluminum walls of the emergency vehicle. Although it sounds abnormal that a dog would be the one to save someone’s life, situations similar to the one above are not uncommon. When I was little my teachers would ask me “Cora, What do you want to be when you grow up”? In reality, I couldn’t make up my mind on what I wanted to be ‘when I grew up’. When I was around seven, I went from wanting to be a Veterinarian to being an Astronaut, then back to a Veterinarian again. Around age 10, I wanted to be a dentist, even though I hate mouths. Then I wanted to be a Veterinarian again. Junior Year of high school came and when we started to research colleges and careers I heard that Premed programs were so hard to get into, and I wasn’t fooling anyone with my grades. I did some research on Veterinarians and I discovered that the Veterinarians don’t really handle the animals like I thought they did. “Virtually 96 percent of their lives are spent in chains or cages,” and “11 months a year they travel over long distances in box cars with no climate control; sleeping, eating, and defecating in the same cage,” as stated by PAWS, Protective Animal Welfare Society, is one of the many organizations that strives to protect animals right and sheds light on this horrific situation that should be stopped at once. This is an insight of what the animals have to endure just for our entertainment. PAWS also discuses when these animals are eventually allowed out of their cages they undergo “extreme ‘discipline’ such as whipping, hitting, poking, and shocking with electrical prods,” for training purposes to ensure that the performance goes without any complications. The transportation of theses animals is cruel and unusual no matter how it is looked at.
Animals should not be held captive in zoos because it is inhumane and unfair to the animals. There are so many records of terrible things that have happened to animals in zoos over the past few centuries, the go under the radar too often. Too few people even know about these animal care atrocities, and therefore the New York Times decided to bring light upon this situation. The Times did a first-of-its-kind analysis of 390 elephant fatalities at accredited U.S. zoos over the past 50 years (Berens 3). It found that most of the elephants died from injury or disease linked to conditions of their captivity, from chronic foot problems caused by standing on hard surfaces to musculoskeletal disorders from inactivity caused by being penned or chained for days and weeks at a time.
Now let’s take a look at Orcas and the torture they go through at places like Sea World and Sea Land. What exactly do you think goes on in there after hours? Do you think they are just trained so well that they are released overnight and just come back the next day by themselves? I sure hope not, though. They are kept in tiny wells, it wouldn’t be tiny to us, but they spend their off time in a little tank with seven to nine other orcas that could be up to twenty three feet long and weigh up to six tons and they aren’t happy so you could imagine what they do to each other while in there.
Should the torture of an innocent animal go unpunished? No, it should not; the real question is to what extent should the perpetrator be punished? The most basic definition of animal abuse is the intentional act of inflicting physical pain, suffering, or death on an animal; this includes monstrous neglect (the act of withholding food and water) that causes an animal to suffer, die, or be put in imminent danger of death. Currently, animal cruelty offenders are not punished to the extent that some believe they should be. Animal cruelty should receive mandatory jail time because the abuse towards an innocent animal is deemed inhumane and oftentimes is a precursor for violence against humans.
