Animal cruelty is a very common thing and concern in many places all over the world. Animal abuse is an issue that not everyone looks at or pays attention to. This is because of people not being informed of the kinds of abuse that pets, farm animals, and wildlife animals go through. People need to learn the connection between animal abuse and domestic violence and also violent crimes. Animal cruelty and abuse is a large problem that should be addressed.
There are many reasons to why people would be cruel to animals. Animal cruelty is often committed by a person who feels powerless, unnoticed, or under the control of others. Their reasoning might be to shock, threaten, intimidate, offend others, or demonstrate rejection. Some people that harm or are cruel to animals perform acts that they have seen or have happened to them. Others harm see harming animals as a way to get revenge against or threaten them. They could also harm an animal to hurt not just the animal but someone who cares for that animal. “Pet abuse problems were defined as problematic behaviors, aggressive behaviors, grew larger than expected, or health problems that the owner wasn’t prepared for”(ASPCA 1). What is animal cruelty? Why do animals mean so much to most people? Animal cruelty is when someone hurts an animal or does not care for an animal responsibly, like not giving a dog or cat food and water. It's against the law to abuse animals but they don't have a punishment harsh enough for anybody that does that. Animals mean so much to most people because most people would consider a pet more of a friend than just an animal. I’m against animal abuse, and I really think there should be a harsher penalty.

In general, for an act to be considered as animal cruelty, it must be a non-accidental, socially unacceptable, enacted on a vertebrate animal, causing pain, suffering and distress or death.
