In today 's world driving plays a huge role in most everyone’s lives. People spend hours of their day in a car, logging tens of thousands of miles every year. Driving is a favored mode of transportation, a rite of passage for teenagers, a necessity for the working class, and above all a privilege. With this privilege comes responsibility, driving is a serious matter and shouldn 't be taken lightly. According to NHTSA 's Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), in 2011 alone, 32,479 were killed from motor vehicle crashes in the United States, with another 2.2 million injured. Weighing in at several thousand pounds, motor vehicles are and should be considered weapons. Death can occur in many ways due to aggressive driving. Aggressive driving may aggravate other drivers on the road, and has been known to result in those other drivers injuring or killing the aggressive driver. For example, if someone is driving aggressively and cuts off another driver, that driver could catch up to him at a stop light or at his house. He then could have a weapon on him that he uses to injure or kill the aggressive driver. Another way of death due to aggressive or unsafe driving is from a crash. With the number of cars on the road, if a driver is speeding or driving in an unsafe manner it is likely that they could crash into another car or person, killing not only the driver but any passenger he or she might have in the car and anyone in the car that he or she hit. Death doesn 't only affect the driver, passenger, or people that were killed in an accident. A fatality affects the friends and family of the deceased, and the community forever. Friends and Family affected by death have lost a part of their lives forever, and can be further affected by things such as depression and suicide. Law enforcement is responding to calls of reckless, aggressive, and unsafe driving while their resources may be better allocated elsewhere. If all drivers were responsible and safe in their driving, there would be less of a need for enforcement in this area. Aggressive and unsafe driving is a cost to society. Dangers on roadways is an issue that describes the discrepancy between perception and reality of road rage. The media, for some odd reason, tends to make road rage a huge controversial issue. As seen on talk shows from Oprah Winfrey to CNN, they reveal to people that road rage could happen at any time and to always be looking over your shoulder. These talk shows and news programs also put fear into our minds by explaining that most roadragers often use guns to kill or injure their victims. Glassner contradicts the media's speculations by stating that out of approximately 250,000 people killed on roadways between 1990-1997, AAA attributed that one in one thousand was an act of road rage (pg.5).
There are approximately 5,400 deaths per year that are linked to distracted driving, and thousands more were injured. (U.S. Department of Labor). Those fatalities are our neighbors, close friends, and even family. How can we prevent this from being so prominent? How can we make the roads a safe place to be again? These questions have many different answers, but many prove to be un-effective. I believe that the best and only way to resolve this issue is to implement tougher laws on cell-phone use in vehicles, and educate our youth to the best of our abilities on the dangers of distracted driving.

Every person who has gets behind the wheel of a motor vehicle will be involved in some sort of automobile collision at some point in his or her lifetime. Traffic accidents account for over twenty thousand deaths each year and more than ten times as many injuries. There are a number of factors that contribute to these types of collisions, however, new and evolving laws can account for a large portion of successful preventable measures. In order for laws to be changed or added for the purpose of safer roads and highways, lawmakers have to first look at what factors contribute to such unsafe conditions. The top five causes of automobile accidents that cause injury are distracted drivers, driver fatigue, drunk driving, speeding, and aggressive driving. Laws can be proposed to reduce and even eliminate each of these risks.
Most if not all teens look forward to several events in their life. One of those events are getting a driver's license. This small piece of plastic is their ticket to freedom. This ticket is more than just freedom to be able to drive their friends around but also freedom from the ritual of their parents having to drive them everywhere and embarrass them in public. Also this is a freedom to the parents as well they may save more on gas from not having to drive their children around. However, some teens are not as safe as they possibly could be if they were to take a few steps to promote good driving habits. Approximately 6,800,000 crashes occur in the United States each year; a substantial number are estimated to be caused by aggressive driving. 1997 statistics compiled by NHTSA and the American Automobile Association show that almost 13,000 people have been injured or killed since 1990 in crashes caused by aggressive driving. According to a NHTSA survey, more than 60 percent of drivers consider unsafe driving by others, including speeding, a major personal threat to themselves and their families. About 30 percent of respondents said they felt their safety was threatened in the last month, while 67 percent felt this threat during the last year. Road rage/aggressive driving starts from things such as illegal or improper lane changes, failing to yield the right of way, and excessive speeding just to name a few. Everyday we deal with this type of driving. Everyone runs a great risk just driving around the corner to the local convenience store or just to the local church. According to U.S. News and World Report, the United States Department of Transportation estimates that two-thirds of fatalities are at least partially caused by road rage/ aggressive driving. This essay will look at some of the arguments for and against road rage/aggressive driving.
