Currently, twenty-four of every one thousand teenagers has an abortion. This means that over two hundred thousand teenagers get an abortion every year. Of all the battles in our half-century culture war, perhaps none seems further from being resolved, in our laws and in our consciences, than abortion. It’s a fight now in its fifth decade, yet in the past two years, twenty six states have passed over one hundred eleven provisions restricting abortion. But for all the regulations and protests, abortion is part of our everyday experience. Nearly half of all pregnancies are unintended and out of all of them about half of those will end in abortion every year. I know a lot of my friends when they got their belly buttons pierced did not fully complete the six months of post medical care. Parents would guarantee that teenagers take the post-operative care that is needed after a medical procedure like abortion.
Although, the popular opinion on parental consent seems to be in favor of it, there is a population that is against it. People say that parental consent threatens the safety of minors and limits abortion access. Parental consent and involvement puts teenagers at risk of physical violence or abuse. It also results in teenagers delaying abortions until later in their pregnancy, which carries a greater risk of complications and also more expensive to obtain (Liss-Schultz).
This is untrue! Teenagers that tell their parents that they are thinking about undergoing an abortion actually are safer in their home environments and receive their abortions earlier in their pregnancies. Parents are understanding and prefer that their teenagers tell them about their possible decision to submit themselves to an abortion so they can help choose what is best for their
