The Olympic Games, defined as, “A group of modern international athletic contests held as separate winter and summer competitions every four years in a different city” (Olympic Games, n.d.), are highly anticipated by the whole world every four years because it holds the title of “the world’s preeminent sporting competition”(The Olympic Games, 2010). The upcoming 2016 Olympics will be held in beautiful Rio de Janeiro. The Olympics have been around for close to 3,000 years, originating in Olympia, Greece. Zeus, the mighty god of Greek mythology, is the reason the games began, because followers of Zeus wanted to honor him. (The Olympic Games, 2010). Obviously, the games have vastly changed. The Unites States is always the top ranked countries for medal count. Americans, including myself, are always interested in the games. News networks are filled with Olympic news, and citizens hold gatherings just to watch the games. Every four years, America is given yet another chance to show our haughty nature toward U.S. athletes. Qualifying citizens go through several trials to be on the best teams in the country. We as a nation take overwhelming pride in the Olympics, because we have some of the best athletes in the world. Technological advances in Rio will ultimately help the American viewer. The broadcasting technology for the Olympics isn’t necessarily top of the line, the main goal of the technology is to reduce risk of hackers. Developers will use the safest networks possible, while still giving life-like picture quality and fast, play-by-play broadcasting (Sawyer, 2004, p.39-44). The government will go to all extents to make sure they put the best athletes forward. The U.S. always tends to go over the average limits when it comes to the Olympics, or anything that puts American pride on the line.
