It is easy to assume that parenting comes natural to everyone, but that is not the case. Many couples get pregnant before they planned to. In fact, “According to the March of Dimes, about three in 10 teenage girls become pregnant before the age of 20.”(Slocum, Meghan). When it comes to parenting many of these new parents really do not have a clue what they are doing. Being too ashamed to admit this, many of them keep their struggles to themselves and just attempt to do the best they can. However, there are times that these parents end up abusing, neglecting, and damaging their children. Over the last few decades parenting has changed a great deal. New parents are expected to know how to handle really mature situations and also cope with the stress that goes hand in hand with being a parent. Not only are new parents expected to do this, but they are expected to do it with no prior experience or knowledge of children or parenting. I find it to be a little odd that foster parents are required to take parenting classes to provide security to children after something happened instead of trying to prevent the problem and educate people before any incidents occur “Child Protective Services (CPS) recognizes that 16 hour of pre-service training for foster parent is insufficient” Therefore, CPS requires potential foster parents to attend Parent Resource Information Development Education (PRIDE) as part of the family’s required pre-service training” (“Steps to Become a Foster/Adoptive Parent”). People parent their own children in similar ways that they were raised. Sometimes this is a good thing, and other times it’s really not healthy. Some families are dysfunctional and people tend to spread their dysfunctions to their offspring simply because they think that it is normal. They know no other way. If there were a required parenting class in every high school this would eliminate people “not knowing any better” and would prevent so many kids from being abused and
