America’s borders have been reduced to a dilapidated mound of hatred and failed executive orders. The word immigration itself is held to a negative light in every aspect. Everyone has an opinion and shrill voice, yet no one has any real solution. Donald Trump plans to “end catch-and-release. Under a Trump administration, anyone who illegally crosses the border will be detained until they are removed out of our country” (par. 2, pt. 2). Hillary Clinton dreams of “a hemispheric common market, with open trade and open borders” (WikiLeaks) whether they’re criminals or not. These are not solutions; America’s immigration epidemic cannot be solved through extremist directives. Our border security is useless, yet those who seek to help only want to tape the broken system and call it new. Sadness cannot begin to describe this picture. However, there is a distinction to be made from families seeking refuge. There are immigrants who smuggle themselves into America for its generous welfare programs. In this lies the true problem, and the solution: How do we distinguish the hard-working aliens from the lazy immigrants on welfare? Remove the welfare. This step sounds impossible, but when the other steps are considered in light of this one, the deal sweetens a bit more. If we remove welfare and remove the criminals, the cadgers of our society will have no benefits to reap, and the only immigrants left would be the ambitious, dedicated, or desperate. Once a short term of six years is spent as an American citizen paying taxes, working, and living their American dream, the immigrant and his immediate family is given citizenship and can thus apply for financial aid once again.
