Alcohol is like a drug to many people. It is a worldwide fact that alcohol is the most drug utilized in America. There are many types of alcohol such as spirits, liquors, wines/champagne and beer. Most of these have the same kind of effect on you. Many people drink alcohol because it’s always available, or because alcoholism, and lastly to drown in their sorrows. No matter your age alcohol is always accessible to you worldwide. In some countries people can be 16 and up to drink or even buy alcohol, however here in America people have to 21 and up to buy alcohol but many liquor stores break this law. They sell to any one such as people with fake ids, no ids or real ids. It doesn’t matter who they sell it to as long as they making money. Now a day’s people are greedy and would do anything for money. We also have some liquor stores who follow the law but because teenagers want to grow up fast, they will find adults outside or even a family member to buy them alcohol. Imagine America today where alcohol is banned. People would think that this would help control order in America but banning alcohol would not be the best idea. Alcohol were those kinds of beverages that was used for centuries but is widely accepted by most people today. Most people would even want to try drinking alcohol in their lifetime. The eighteenth amendment of the constitution, also known as “The Noble Experiment”, was an establishment of prohibiting the production, sale, and transportation of alcohol in the United States. The purpose of this amendment was to reduce the crimes and violence that involved the consumption of alcohol. The purpose was to also improve health and to prevent people from poverty. Thus began the Prohibition era. The amendment was a law that backfired in gaining control within America. Once the prohibition era started, it changed everything. There was organized crimes and corruption in the United States, the economy went bad, saloons were closed, leaving most owners in poverty, and violence had increased since mobsters smuggled and fought each other for the marketing of alcohol. The twenty first amendment which repealed the eighteenth amendment, thus making alcohol legal again. The prohibition era failed to control alcohol consumption because of the increase in organized crimes and that the government spent billions of dollars trying to prevent drinking in the United States .
I believe that alcohol taxes should be raised in order to reduce the frequency of alcohol abuse. A sharp increase in taxes has been shown to decrease the number of alcohol abusers. Instituting these tax increases could save thousands of lives and billions of dollars annually.
To understand alcoholism, it must first be understood what this affliction is dependent on. Alcohol is a substance that is made by the fermentation of fruits, grains, or miscellaneous other organic materials. The chemical, alcohol, is a depressant and acts on every cell in the human body. Due to this, the central nervous system, along with the pleasure centers of the brain, are affected resulting in a feeling of euphoria and a sense of well being. After repeated exposure, the brain becomes dependent on this drug to unburden itself whenever it feels the compulsion. Several factors that contribute to alcoholism are the individual’s psychology, genetics, culture, and the individual’s response to physical pain.
Once adults turn 21, they will buy alcohol for their younger friends and it will not stop them from drinking. As kids grow up they are surrounded by opportunities to try alcohol as stated by NIAAA, “As kids get older, they drink more. By age 15, half of teens have had at least one drink. By age 18, more than 70% of teens have had at least one drink” (NIAAA). This proves that it is also very easy for 18 year olds to get a hold of alcohol. These problems include the rise of speakeasies, gangsters, and bootlegging. The intent of prohibition was to lower crime, poverty, family violence, prostitution, and industrial accidents. Overall prohibition failed at improving moral judgment and instead caused some major problems.
