The entirety of my middle and high school years revolved around the idea that I would help people in a health profession, but I was never sure what that meant; so I always aimed high. I finally realized I wanted to be a pharmacist in my second year of college. I knew what pharmacists could do since I watched my dad while he worked in a small pharmacy in Queens all my life. As a teenager, my dad would bring me to work with him and I would help and shadow the pharmacist. I never thought much of the profession then, however, Mr. Masub explained to me that pharmacists didn’t just count pills. Pharmacy was a broad field filled with untapped potential, from clinical to ambulatory care. Most of all, he saw potential in me to make a real difference …show more content…
Gilda’s Club serves a place for support and networking for those who have cancer or are affected by it. As a Junior Ambassador, I helped advertise and bring awareness about the resources offered at Gilda’s Club in the community by hosting a table at fairs, and fundraised for our annual spring benefit luncheon. My experience further reinforced my decision to pursue pharmacy because cancer patients of all ages held their pharmacists with high regard. Their pharmacists gave them hope. As a part of MAS, our youth group helped dispel myths and stereotypes of Muslims through our Interfaith Dinner in the month of Ramadan. We invited Fathers, Pastors, Rabbis and Imams, and asked our local police force to join. The dinner had good conversation with even better food, and people left knowing more and feeling more comfortable in battling negative preconceptions of Islam. Having these honest conversations, regardless of the topic, debunks myths which allows for a more personal connection and better understanding for both parties. This is important in pharmacy, since we promise to help everyone whatever the background, race or
As the number of Muslims increases in America, the Muslim culture is still widely misunderstood. The Islamic view of illness differs significantly from the views of Americans, therefore making it very difficult to care for them if there is a lack of education about their needs. “Despite the cultural diversity between Muslim groups, there is a common set of beliefs and practices that are shared by all Muslims, principally: the belief in Allah, the belief that the Qur’an is from God, and that Muhammad was the last prophet of God” (Al-Oraibi, 2009.) Health care providers should be educated on the Muslims practices relating to prayer, gender issues, modesty, fasting, bodily contact, and dietary and medication restrictions (Al-Oraibi, 2009.) When Muslims feel misunderstood in the healthcare system, it could aff...
As time progressed and my experiences grew, they became more redundant and rudimentary. I began to feel that becoming a pharmacist may not meet my expectations in terms of the level of patient interaction and the role I would play as a health care provider. It was at this point that I made the decision to branch off and research other health care professions that could play well to my interests and allow for the level of patient care I was looking for.
Since my early schooling days, science and mathematics have always fascinated me given that all components of the world are explained on the basis of these disciplines. In this regard, Pharmacy which is based on Chemistry and Mathematics has interested me a great deal as it has direct impacts on our daily lives. The more I have become familiar with the chemistry and mathematics knowledge involved in pharmacy, the more I have appreciated its significance in improving the lives of people in the community. Out of the many careers that one would opt to pursue, Pharmacy has stood out as the career that will enable me serve the society more directly and have a real impact in the quality of peoples’ lives by touching their health. In addition, I love a career that is challenging and one that I will be involved in even in old age. In this case, Pharmacy offers me this opportunity. My interest in Pharmacy has also developed from my personal health experiences and becoming aware of its expansiveness. Every time I have had to take medicine to cure an illness, I have become more interested to know how drugs are made and how the drug components work in the human body to alleviate pain and restore health. I desire to pursue a career in Pharmacy so as to gain practical experience in these aspects of research.
I grew up in a research and development campus where my father is a scientist. Research and curiosity were constantly encouraged and this prompted me to take up medicine as a career, a field that offers tremendous prospects for research and discoveries. Throughout medical school I tried to be involved in research and attempts at trying out new ideas, be it in the lab or working with human subjects. I carried this through my residency and now my fellowship. The idea of studying a topic or issue that has so far not been treaded upon seems to be extremely exciting and challenging.
In my personal belief and through my experiences, the study of dentistry offers the opportunity to combine my aptitude and interests in scientific study with my ability and desire to communicate with people and make a positive difference in their lives. I wish to study this course due to my new-found respect for the career and to unite my caring nature for people with my deep interest in science, art and the human body. For me, dentistry is not just about teeth, it’s about those other qualities that make a successful dentist such as positive interaction, community interest and a meaningful interest in your patients.
I believe that my personal, educational and professional experiences I have accumulated throughout the years have shaped me into a strong candidate to become a pharmacist. With these experiences, I am now a confident, self-motivated and an enthusiastic individual who is not only result driven but also aware of the need to adopt a holistic approach toward any circumstances. I am ready to face the challenges that the profession will bring, and I am inspired to reach my lifelong goal of becoming a dedicated and knowledgable healthcare provider that can improve other’s
I have successfully completed my secondary education and now feel that I would like to contribute positively to my community, as this would be extremely fulfilling personally and professionally. I would be able to accomplish this by using this opportunity to directly help people and make a difference to their lives. This combined with my great appreciation for the subject Science - is why I believe that a career in medicine would be ideal for me. I aspire to have a future in the Medical field as I am a caring and selfless person and I believe that these are essential qualities, necessary to help support the diverse needs of people requiring medical attention.
At an Elementary School career day years ago, I witnessed the earliest glimpse of my future. When filling out my career choice in my chicken scratch handwriting, I wrote the word, “farmacist.” My mom works as a pharmacist, and at the time I aspired to grow up to be just like to her! Therefore, when career day rolled around I dressed in a white coat, carrying a large vial full of M&M’s to dispense to my classmates. Now, several years later I find myself applying to Pharmacy School and following in my mother’s footsteps. Of course my career path has been less than a straight shot from “farmasist” to pharmacist. My passion and talent for math and science in high school had me seriously considering a career in engineering. However, I recognized
Ever since my freshman year of high school, I thought I would pursue a career in the medical field. I enjoyed taking science classes, I was smart enough to understand and excel in those subject, and I knew I could make good money in that field. When I went to college, I quickly became a biology major without a second thought. During my first year in college I realized there are many other options and subjects that I enjoyed, specifically music and dancing. I took piano lessons and competed in gymnastics from the age of four years until my senior year of high school.
When young adults are challenged to pick a career, particularly in the medical field, most do not think of becoming a pharmacist. This low key career started with apothecaries, people who used botany and chemistry to help cure people. Unfortunately, their practice helped cure little to no patients, but as technology advanced, they abandoned their botany based methods and began to work with physicians. Thus, the pharmacist was created and continues to help heal the sick today. A pharmacist is “an expert in the use of medicines and drugs” (McAlpine 52) and uses their knowledge to create medications according to the doctors’ instructions. However, the job description of a pharmacist is increasing and it is not uncommon to find a patient directly talking to a pharmacist about their prescription. Pharmacists now inform patients on the proper usage of the medication and its side effects (52). Patients can bypass their physician, if they have any questions or concerns abou...
Every person faces their own personal struggles but what if someone could make a difference in their battles? I have chosen to enter the medical field to have a positive impact on peoples’ lives. One act of kindness can provide comfort, safety, and even new hope. From personal experience I cannot convey the extraordinary impact that a single caring individual can have on someone facing life’s challenges. I was diagnosed with epilepsy 12 years ago at age 14.
Ever since I started understanding things and as I processed maturity, I grasped that the human body is an incredible thing and it has always come to my mind that how it works and responds to things is very fascinating. My decision to work in a medical field came from several experiences throughout my life. Science has been my primary interest since I started school. When I was in elementary and middle school I was always one of the final competitors in science timed tests, oral science quizzes, etc. I have always enjoyed the competition amongst associates and enjoyed the challenge of school work.
My passion to become a pharmacist began after I have started working as a pharmacy technician in a hospital since 2012. Before I join the pharmacy team at the Prince George hospital, I had less experience and knowledge about pharmacy and the people who work there. Thus, working as a pharmacy technician has ignited my inner desire to be a pharmacist. To add more, the pharmacology course I took while I was in medical school in Ethiopia has laid the foundation for me to understand the different variety of drugs, and their use and side effects. Also, it helped me to enhance my knowledge of the mechanism of action of various drugs available in the market.
I pleased to apply to the PharmD program as the program is one area that corresponds to my career dreams. Being part of this program gives one the opportunity to gain an excellent experience in working and collaborating with various health care providers in the ward. But more importantly, it facilitates a practical environment in dealing more closely with patients. Hence, it helps to provide the ultimate health care services to patients. Also, it permits me to carry on gaining different knowledge, skills, and values in addition to those I have already developed during my undergraduate studies. My interest in being a clinical pharmacist was first aroused during my SPEP rotation in the hospital setting where I was really impressed with the role of clinical pharmacists who provide a consistent process of patient care with healthcare teams to maintain the appropriateness, effectiveness and safety of the medication use. Unlike a pharmacist, a clinical pharmacist has a more diversified responsibilities and closeness to direct patient care. Moreover, provides
During my senior year in high school, I started an internship at Walgreens Pharmacy in Brownsville, Texas. This was a unique opportunity for me to find out if I would like to have a career as a pharmacist. So far, not only have I learned about my interest in pharmacy, but I have also learned from Dr. Leonard, one of the pharmacists at Walgreens. Even though I have made many mistakes as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee, Dr. Leonard always motivated me to do better the next time and stay positive. He always has a smile when he is working and looks forward to helping others. As a result of his qualities, Dr. Leonard assists everyone work easier together because there are never arguments. If there is a misunderstanding, Dr. Leonard al...
