When most reminisce on their teenage years they recall high school football games, late nights with old friends and hoping summer would never end. The vivid memories of my teenage years are slightly different. What I did with my friends, those memories seem faint. It is the images of my father becoming ill that are unforgettable. For three years he rotated between his primary care physician, specialist and the occasional hospital visit. He meet thousands of individuals that gave him hope and encouraged him to never give up. These strangers helped keep a smile on my father’s face through the most difficult time in his life. Until, one day we laid our eyes upon my father for the very last time in an Intensive Care Unit. I studied health science and obtained my Bachelors of Science in Health Science with a pre-health professional concentration. During my undergraduate years I dedicated an abundance of my efforts into running student organizations. This is where I found my passion. Learning the vast inner working of organizations and developing ways to improve upon them is what I find intriguing. During my last year of undergrad I landed my first position at Beaumont Health Systems. During my first few months of work I came to the realization that my love for the health field and my passion for organizational management collide within the organization. There are many individuals working as management and administration in order to keep Beaumont Health Systems functioning and continuously working to improve the patient experience. With this degree I am anticipating enhancing my career by taking the knowledge gain from my continued schooling in combination with my work exsperience and applying it in a management position. My current short term career objective is to work in management in a hospital setting. Well, my long term career objective is to work in administration in a hospital setting. These objectives unify my desire to make a positive impact on those in need by working in the health care field and my passion of organizational management. On February 14th I spent a day doing something I never thought I would do in a million years, I went to hospice. I always thought I would hate hospice, but I actually didn’t mind it too much, it isn’t a job I see myself doing in the future but it is a job that I understand why people do it and why they enjoy it. During this observation I was touched by how much these nurses really seem to care for each of the patients that they have.
A week before Christmas in 2013, my stepfather suddenly lost consciousness. His body stiffened and he began to violently convulse – he was having a seizure. Later in the hospital, the doctors informed us that my stepdad had suffered a hemorrhagic stroke. The anguish that I felt that night was eased by a nurse who talked to my family about my stepfather’s condition and assured us that the hospital would do everything that they can to assist him with recovery. The next few weeks were filled with uncertainty as my stepdad laid comatose, no knowledge of when or even if he would wake up. During that time, my interactions with the nurses always made me feel safe and comforted Unfortunately, he passed away in January 2014. Though this was a traumatic and life altering experience, what I remember most are the nurses that provided care to my stepfather. They went above and beyond their outlined job duties to care for my loved one and to make my family feel secure even in such a difficult time.
Communicating with someone who has a life-altering illness is not an easy task. A person needs to have compassion, patience, and listening skills. I have seen firsthand how a caring healthcare provider and having an attitude of optimism can prolong a person’s life.
My career goal is to be the best Practice manager that I can be by making sure the office or facility I will be running is financially stable, I need to make sure that business is good. I want also make sure that my employees are happy where they work and feel appreciated. When your workers love their job and the company they work for business tends to run smoothly and successful. Being a Practice manager isn’t the job title I want for the rest of my life. I plan on getting my Masters in Healthcare Administration once I receive my bachelors. I will be working my way up to be a Hospital Administrator that is my big goal. I see so many Hospital Administrators in charge of the operations and the workers of the hospital whom don’t care about the patient or their employees. I want to be that Hospital Administrator that ensures that the employees are being treated properly as well as feeling worthy. I have seen people not give a care about the patient because they feel the company they work for doesn’t give a care about them. My goal would be to ensure that operations of the hospital are going smoothly, make sure the budget is carefully looked after. Budget would be the biggest responsibility that I would look after; your budget keeps the hospital a better place especially if it’s just right. One fateful day at the end of June in 1998 when I was spending some time at home; my mother came to me with the bad news: my parent's best friend, Tommy, had been diagnosed with brain cancer. He had been sick for some time and we all had anxiously been awaiting a prognosis. But none of us were ready for the bumpy roads that lay ahead: testing, surgery, chemotherapy, nausea, headaches, and fatigue. Even loud music would induce vomiting. He just felt all around lousy.
I believe that leadership is something that should be earned. Whoever is the most qualified and passionate should be the person who leads, not the most popular. I believe that having integrity and expecting it at all times from your team is the best way to operate. I believe that leaders cannot always be the “good guys” in every situation. I believe that it is important to find people who will help you most achieve your goal, but ones who are loyal, passionate, and want to grow personally. Mutual respect in any situation will allow for people to speak their minds, even if it is difficult. In December, my father suffered a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm. His heart stopped twice during the operation, and he was not expected to survive. He had an intensive recovery period, and I wanted nothing more than to make him better immediately. His trauma had made me impatient and afraid to hope. I was having trouble waiting for things to unfold naturally and wanted to know what would happen in the end. Simple, everyday decisions or occurrences took on great importance.
Is a leader as defined in the Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, merely one who leads - synonymous with a boss? Or something more? I believe that a leader is much more than that and can be defined in any number of ways. In attempting to define a leader personally, I will use both myself and others as examples.
As a person who is for the most part uncomfortable with change, it is important that I find ways be a leader in a world that is ever changing. In order to be the best and most prepared leader as possible, it is necessary to be aware of one’s core identity and the values, talents, and strengths that are included in this. Consistent with the indications of Vaill’s term, “permanent white water”, the tendency of the world to change is unavoidable and “continual”. We as leaders must find ways to adapt and acclimate ourselves to these situations. Through the discovery of my core values, talents, leadership style, I will be able to develop an action plan to transform my talents into strengths and use leadership techniques to best accommodate my ambitions.
I have always been determined to enter the financial sector and contribute the growth and development of this area; I want to make a great impact on this industry. My desire is sustained by the inspirational role models that drive the corporation forward; like Alan sugar. I realised that not only academic understanding is needed, but motivation, confidence and creativity are also, needed to flourish.
I have worked for a variety of businesses and organisations during my three years working in the marketing and communications sector. I have been able to utilise the skills I have gained in my academic career working for a charitable organisation as well as most recently, one of the largest printing organisations in the UK. Knowledge During my time working for the Stephens & George Print Group as well as its Charitable Trust, I have been able to gain significant experience producing press releases and liaising with local media sources to promote these news stories. I have developed close working relationships with contacts at the Western Mail, Wales Online and various local newspapers.
Leaders will no matter what have an influence on our world. They have missions, dreams and ambition, and with these things they are bound to go far. For leaders, what makes these dreams come true is having strong qualities such as leadership practices, values and strengths. If developed and learned how to use correctly, these are what take leaders to the next level and accomplish great things. I plan to pursue a career in human resource management which UCSD does not offer a major or program that is specific to such a career path. Yonsei University’s business administration major, will help me greatly in pursuing my goals. Under their program, I will be able to expand my knowledge on organizational behavior. Additionally, being a psychology major, I am interested in how people from other cultures think, and studying abroad will allow me to catch a glimpse of a perspective I’m not exposed to in the U.S.
The kids may have different prosperities, but they are all the same, and I would like to spend more time with not only the patients I have already met, but with new people that come to that hospital. Any sickness can give us a different expectation on life, and anytime we get some form of news like we have been diagnosed with something, it blows up in our face. We don’t really start looking about the future till we get news like that. People don’t really know what they had until it’s gone, because tomorrow is not promised. Be a leader. Be a fighter. You weren’t given these challenges if people didn’t believe you can overcome them.
