Being exposed to dentistry and observing my family help improve the oral health and visual cosmetics of thousands of patients in the dental field has influenced my potential career options. The success of my father, aunt, uncle, and grandpa has encouraged me to follow in their footsteps and hopefully become a dentist myself. Furthermore, the prospects of being in such a unique healthcare field that provides the ability to instantly make someone happier with their visual appearance creates one of the greatest feelings of satisfaction to both the doctor and the patient.. Over the past few years of highschool, I had been stopping in periodically to watch my dad work on prosthodontics in the lab such as partials, temporary crowns, night guards and more. One of the most exciting aspects of dentistry is being able to create something from nothing for a patient, and not even being able to tell they had any dental work done on them. Since then, I have come to learn the basic steps of procedures that are carried out on a regular basis such as preparing fillings or drilling out the tooth’s roots in a root canal. More specifically, I know exactly what is necessary to carry out each procedure such as specific instruments, composites, and special hardware needed. In one instance, a patient came in that had a toothache, and ended up needing a filling on his wisdom tooth. In order for my dad to keep the tooth dry, I had to prepare the bonding material for the patient, and to hand it to him along with filling material itself. The feeling of knowing that I played a role in helping to cure the patient’s ailment brought an incredible feeling of self-satisfaction to
