Throughout my years of schooling, I have always had a passion for science. My interests arose at a young age. Classroom lab experiments introduced me to this subject in elementary school, and my interest in science continued to develop as I continued as a student in high school. My high school career contained multiple science classes that I thoroughly enjoyed. Although I knew that I adored biology and chemistry during secondary school, my ideas for post-secondary education were not clear. One of my most significant goals is to become a physician. In order to achieve this goal, it is necessary that I attend and complete medical school. My undergraduate university education will provide me with the necessary knowledge that I will need to successfully pursue my goal of attending medical school. Throughout my university career, I will be more knowledgeable in scientific fields such as biology and chemistry, which will contribute to my understanding of the human body. Also, while studying psychology at university, individuals learn about chemicals in the brain and how they affect behaviour and bodily functions. By more clearly understanding how the human brain functions, I will better comprehend the human body and develop the knowledge that a physician needs to treat a patient. In the first years of my university education I will be able to become familiar with the post-secondary environment, as well as the course work. When the time arises to apply to medical school, I hope that my university education will allow me to be successful in doing so. Attending medical school will allow me to achieve my goal of becoming a physician. My courses will become more specific and directed specifically towards the career of a physician. I began my college career unsure of the path ahead of me. I knew I had a passion for medicine, however, I did not know which direction I would take. With the expansive amount of options offered within the fields of science and medicine, it was difficult to narrow down exactly what direction I wanted to take. I gained some clarity the summer of my sophomore year when I stayed at a close friend’s home, whose father, a practicing Medical Physician, became somewhat of a mentor to me. The passionate way in which he discussed the practice of medicine led me to develop an interest in pursuing a career as a physician. Medical School Personal Statement Growing up I did not want to be a “doctor” nor did I want to go to medical school. In fact, I didn’t want to go to college. I planned to graduate from high school with a diploma get a job and start making money. But things don’t always go as planned. It was during high school where my goals and aspirations for the future changed.
The life of a successful physician is my ultimate pursuit due to its fulfilment of all of my personal desires: a complete knowledge of the human body, a desire to impact the world positively, and a yearning to lead a life dedicated to helping others. My personal drive towards medicine came about-in part -due to the passion both my parents possess for their jobs. Becoming a doctor will grant me the ability to directly analyze, examine and comfort some of the people who suffer similar setbacks as my parents. The field of medicine is a growing sector in desperate need of brilliant yet compassionate innovators who will be well equipped and capable of formulating, addressing and analyzing pressing issues. Participating in the Drexel Pathway to Medicine program will grant me the opportunity to quantitatively and analytically strengthen my core skills, knowledge, and facilitate my development in a developing industry. I dreamt of walking on Commonwealth Ave. I envisioned myself entering the Morse Auditorium, books in hand, eager to learn. Ever since I had visited the eclectic city of Boston in 2006, I knew it was the right fit for me. I knew that the city itself, along with the remarkable academic resources that Boston University offers would allow me to grow socially and mentally. Until this day I ask questions on end from my comrades at the BU, impatient to learn more and more about their lives on and off campus. From all the feedback I have received I have come to one conclusion: BU is the place where I will get a rich, broad background in all my studies. BU will give me the foundation and preparation I will need to enter any field of study.
Over the past few weeks I have been researching my interests, values, and goals. Throughout this research a lot of things that were already evident to me, were proven for a fact. After graduation, I took a hiatus from education to re-evaluate my goals and interests. Although I thoroughly evaluated my competence and desire to attend medical school, I thought it necessary to take another year to do so; given the importance of such a decision. During which, I continued to explore my enthusiasm for medicine through shadowing and clinical volunteering opportunities. In the process, reinforcing my already present inclinations to become a physician. When I look back at my life to reach for the moments that define me, I see the look of pride on my mother’s face when I inform her of a new achievement, I smell the freshly cut grass before a major football game, and I hear the sound of my name being read off my pharmacy name tag. But it was not until I read the lines of perplexity and distress on an Alzheimer’s patient’s brow as he grasped for the name of his year-old grandchild, that I was shook with the realization that I had been taking even the smallest of my memories and experiences for granted. In the future, I wish to obtain an occupation in the medical field. I would like to start out by working for a Biology major and working in a premedical field in college where I can use my interest in medicine and my curiosity for knowledge to gain insight that would be needed to become a helpful doctor in the medical field. As I move along in my career, I would like to work my way through the pathway so that I can expand my skills in healing others, such as diagnostic abilities, effectively giving treatment and so on. Passion for Family, Community, Business, Technology and Intellectual growth are what motivate me on the daily basis. These are vital parts that have contributed to framing me into the person I’ve become. They have also shaped my short-term and long-term goals in life. I have always felt drawn to medicine and working in the medical field. Upon entering college, I oscillated between going into the pre-med program or doing engineering, I had no idea what I was meant to do with my life. In this time of contemplation, I found myself being guided towards engineering, whether this was pressuring from others or God, I’m not sure, but I felt it was the right place for me. Since entering college, my understanding of what it means to be a student has changed. I have found that I needed to make a more conscious effort when studying or doing homework. I have realized that this is the time to learn and absorb knowledge because this is one of the last steps in my education.
