When I was in sixth grade, I remember in my computer class we had to research what we wanted to do after we graduated. I’ll be honest, I thought that I wanted to be a fashion designer, a designer! I didn’t realize that what I was researching, was what I wanted my future career to be. The more I researched cosmetology, the more I thought I was going to enjoy the career. So my eighth grade year, I discovered make-up. I then started to do more research and it turns out that by just looking more into that career path makes me want to become someone that can help anyone feel beautiful. My mother's’ biggest fear is that I won’t attend college just like she hadn’t. I look back at my mom's life and think what she could have done to graduate and to further her education. Did she think about her life in the future? No, she only thought about her getting out of Worland High school for good. She always tells me, “Monica don’t give up on school. Look at my life, you don’t want to struggle with money and you most definitely don't want to be a single mother like me, without an education. If I could, I would go back and graduate to make our life better, but it is, was it is. If you don’t want the life I have graduate and further your education. Believe in yourself.” I have looked into so many grants i could in order to attend college and it turns out I could get grants for basically anything. I started looking into grants at the age of fourteen, just in case I didn’t have the money to put me through college, and turns out that was the smartest idea I have ever had. I’m not rich, so I have to think about all possibilities, just so I can to accomplish my dream. If I could give anyone any advice, it would have to be to my siblings and to all the people that are thinking about attending
“Beauty might bring happiness, but happiness always brings beauty” (the daily quotes) If you have ever been unhappy about your appearances remember, it is a very familiar problem every human faces. Cosmetology was created to help those that are in need of their desired look. To express every moment was second of who they are or will become to be. Even though, we have abundant stylist today throughout the country. This career may not be the most satisfying, fun, or even a high-ranking in income, but the satisfaction of each smile is more than enough. However, challenging cosmetology is one of the most creative of all art.

It all began my freshman year of high school when I was told about elective classes that would help me decide what I wanted to be when I grew up. I always had a passion for doing hair, make-up, and nails so that was easy for me to choose an elective. My freshman and sophomore year I decided I would take cosmetology classes. I would spend two hours each day of school in the cosmetology lab, which was always cold and smelled like hairspray, burnt hair from the straighteners or a strong acetone smell that someone gets a whiff of at a nail salon. We learned so much material and I had a good time practicing my skills on manikins and other classmates. Think about what you are doing and when you succeed what life you will have.” There are several different reasons why I could stay home, work and not go to college; I could go to work every day and make more money for the house, it’s easier, and I would be less stressed. Now, on the other hand there are many reasons why I should go to school; such as further my education, make my family proud, and make myself proud. I am attending college for several different reasons. One reason is to further my education. I hate feeling like I don’t know something, I like being the person everyone comes to for information. Also, because I want to be better prepared for my major, I want to be better then the next person with the job credentials. I want to major in Social Work and Criminology. I dream to be a counselor or an clinical service social worker. I want to help people who need someone there for them someone who can guide them or even just talk too. The only person in my family that went to college after high school was my grandmother. I do not want to be just another family member to not go to college; I do not want to give up my dreams, because I do not have the education for them. I want to be able to say I did it for me, for my dreams. There are many different types of careers in the cosmetology field. The different types are; hairstylist, perm or hair color specialist, manicurist, pedicurist, barber, or esthetician. Anyone can major in one of these careers, multiple ones, or all of them. It doesn't matter how many they major in, they will still be considered a cosmetologist. To get a major in cosmetology, it is required to take a class in the career you are interested in. A typical cosmetology training program typically lasts nine months to about a year. Students are instructed on hair styling and cutting, scalp treatments, hair color, manicures and pedicures, chemical texture services, acrylic nail application, massages, facials, and eyebrow shaping. A student then takes advanced courses to expand their knowledge in this career. These courses may include studies on scalp disorders and diseases, scalp analysis, color application techniques, hair cutting tools, main principles of hair design, hair removal, massage techniques and benefits, cosmetology law and safe work practice. Once the course is finished, including service hours, the person then has to take and pass a state exam on the course. Once the exam is passed, the person then receives their certificate.
Every since I was a child I have had a passion for doing other people’s hair. When I was little I would use my baby dolls as clients and work on their hair until it was perfect and neat. I have chosen to be in the cosmetology field because I like to help other people with their needs and wants as well as mine. I am aware that while working in this industry I will work with many different ethnic groups and many different hair types. I feel I can do anything as long as I have the determination to do so. Many people go to cosmetology school to work for someone else, but I would like to open up a mini-salon out of my own home someday.
My parents have this perfect life for me pictured in their heads, and the first thing they see me doing is going to college. They expect the best of me, and so by going to college, I will not only have fulfilled their goals for me, but I will have accomplished one of the goals I have set for myself. In our culture, when parents come to the age where they can’t support themselves, it is the duty of the children to look after them.
From the moment we are born, others wonder what we will grow to be. Will we be a lawyer, a doctor, a teacher? The list of careers is endless. As time passes and as we grow, we ourselves begin to wonder what we will be. Will we be a orthodontist, like Dad? A veterinarian, like Mom? Or will we join the Navy, like Grandpa Doug did? As soon as we begin our schooling, it one main question is commonly asked by both parents, teachers, and peers alike: what do we want to be when we grow up? Some believe that asking these questions and preparing from an early age for a career that we will hopefully continue for the rest of our adult lives is good, that it helps prepare us better and helps us determine early on what our interests are. Other disagree that starting so early in college and career preparation is a good thing, that it may cause students later on in their education to suffer from “burn-out”. The question is, which side is correct? In my opinion, it’s a bit of both: while preparing early and being ready for the next step--college--after being handed our diplomas is important, it can also have a bad result, as far as some students are concerned.
Many years ago I remember my parents telling me that in order for me to become successful a college education was a must. They always told me that if I wasn’t in school I could no longer live at home. Both of my parents attended college but neither of them finished. They did not want me to go down that same road because they really regret not getting their degrees.
Throughout my life, I’ve always had big dreams and goals set for my life just like everyone else. I would constantly daydream and picture myself fulfilling my dreams. But, when the time came to actually plan out how I was going to reach my goal, I couldn’t figure out which path would lead me to my desired future. Every option I would contemplate on doing and try would somehow fail and crumble before my very eyes. After several attempts, I began to question if I was even good enough or qualified enough to go to college. To me, it seemed like the people who had a chance to make it in life were the ones with resourceful parents or the students who were in I.B or in numerous A.P courses. My journey as a student has always been focused on the path to college and success. Before I even set foot in kindergarten my mother, a college dropout, always told me that “honor roll wasn’t an option” and that I would be attending college in the future and achieving a degree. Most of the time I made these requirements. Most of the time I was awarded honor roll or had a newly edited list of colleges to attend, but sometimes life got in the way of my dreams of achieving success.
