My work extends beyond the pen, pencil and pad. Teaching creates for me an intellectual nirvana- a place where a beaming five-year old inspires me as much as any writer ever would. In teaching free writing classes for homeless youth, I saw timid students grow into confident communicator. These kids, who had never taken formal writing lessons, stunned themselves with their own abilities to create sparkling diamonds and seas. But my biggest smile surfaced when my students requested to auction their composition and feed more hungry children like themselves.
