I had a very rewarding experience with my interview. I interviewed a lady named Jody Dawson. She is a nurse educator at Mckay Dee Hospital. I learned a lot of important information about working as a public health educator at for intermountain healthcare. She explained to me that people in this position are focused on improving employee and community health. They made a bold statement about a month ago by going sugar free. They did this to make it a more healthy and healing environment. She told me that my experience working in a hospital will improve my chances of recovering a job there. Before the interview I wasn’t aware of how competitive it can be to be a public health educator in hospitals. I also learned that people have a hard time
My interest in nursing first stemed when my grandfather was diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer. Hospice had come into their home, and I was amazed at how they coped with their job. The people who took care of the person I loved the most, were compassionate and caring. Most of all they helped all of us through a time of need. During that time I realized helping people in whatever way I could in the medical field, was the career for me. My grandmother was also a nurse. She would tell me stories of when she worked in different hospitals. When I heard all of her experiences, I wanted to make memories of my own in the nursing field. This past summer, I took a CNA course at Valley Falls/Holton, Kansas. When I enrolled in this course, I thought

You did an awesome work, I heard. We have monthly meetings, where we talk about the latest news in the nursing world, policy and procedure, quality improvement and many more issues. What I really enjoy about the meeting is that everyone can address his/her concerns without feeling afraid and intimidated. The meeting led by a registered nurse who is familiar with our day to day situation at work.
For my informational interview I spoke with a nurse who has experience working on a medical surgical unit in a hospital setting. She has been a nurse for 10 years. She also has her bachelors degree in nursing. I started my interview by introducing myself and explaining what my assignment was about, and how she could help me tremendously with answering some questions regarding her nursing career, and what she does as a medical surgical nurse.
Fiction and story telling is an integral part of life. It is all around us and we cannot escape it. Storytelling is such a powerful tool in a person’s life and nurses must be able to not only tell stories but also learn how to listen to a patient’s story, interpret the stories, and empathize with the patient. Narrative competence is a valuable skill to have as a nurse. Narrative competence is the “ability to acknowledge, absorb, interpret, and act on the stories and plights of others” (Charon, 2001). This is why having narratives from a patient’s perspective that a nurse can reference to is vital. By reading narrative nurses then have a background or an idea of what a patient may be going through and why he or she is acting in a certain way.

It was becoming increasing clear to me that the hospital environment was a community that I knew one day I wanted to be a part of. For three summers, I shadowed one emergency room physician who has been an amazing role model and mentor. This exposure taught me not only a plethora of terms, but to think critically and quickly and to prioritize and reason in ways that had immediate benefit. I also learned a great deal about bedside manner, and how important it is to be culturally and emotionally sensitive to patients. Like my family, this physician noticed so many important things about people- who they are and what matters to them. She knew just when to touch someone on the shoulder, or to step back. She accounted for age and class and race and subtleties that don’t even have words. She viewed each patient as a whole person. One night a woman was brought into the ER after a car crash and needed a neurological exam immediately. She was wearing a hijab. This physician kindly addressed the woman and asked her if she wanted the door closed while she took off her hijab. They both knew the cultural significance, helping this patient to feel respected and less
As the interview came to a close, the resident remained comfortable and seemed to be open to yet more questions. I feel that the interview was a success not only for myself but for her as well. She learned a few simple safety tips and most of all, enjoyed the company.
I had known for years that I wanted to work in the health care field, but I always believed it would be as a doctor. I watched for the first few years of my brother’s life as he struggled with different health challenges such as being born premature, having croup and breathing difficulty, and speech impairment. Watching my brother struggle and then being able to overcome these difficulties, as well as seeing other children around him who were not as fortunate, really pushed me even at a young age to make a difference. My family, both immediate and extended, were very supportive, and I felt a real positive push towards working hard to achieve that goal of working in health care. In high school, I was fortunate enough to do a cooperative placement at the Peterborough Regional Health Center’s Intensive Care Unit. I started my Nursing career in India and then I came to the United States and became an RN. I entered Nursing with the thinking that Nursing is a profession that will always allow me to have a job and all my patients will get better. However, from my experiences I understood that Nursing is more than just giving medications, and it requires clinical competence, cultural sensitivity, ethics, caring for others, and life-long learning about others and the evolving field of medicine. Florence Nightingale once said:
I have searched the entire web with no success looking for a story that I can relate to. I read many great stories and they were all inspiriting in their special ways, some were very closed to my story, and they were closed to bring tears into my eyes, yet they were not close enough. I search for months, until I realized that we all had a unique story.
During, my visit at your facility I had such a great experience and one in particular with Nurse Dianne Cooper. I'm a returning patient to the Piedmont Physician's office and I left a few years ago due to the awful customer service at your other location. Dianne, was not only professional but kind and informative. She was very attentive , patient and just exemplified what someone in the healthcare profession should. I was so impressed with her I asked the front office if there was anyway to leave a patient review for outstanding service.
“A public health nurse is a nurse who works to promote and protect the health of an entire population” (Allender, Rector, & Warner, 2010, p. 839) the public health nurse I chose to interview was Barbara, she currently works for the Health department and has been there for three years. During the interview Barbara discussed the requirements for a public health nurse. The individual must have the ability to exercise independent judgment, planning and able to administer safe effective public nursing care. In addition be able to work effectively with individuals and families to assist them in the satisfactory solution of health problems, by recognizing and respecting of different cultural, ethnic and difference on health care practices. The nurse is also required to know disease prevention such as, different techniques on teaching, counseling, interviewing and resources available. Barbara stated that the most important part of being a public health nurse is being able to care. Barbara acknowledged that there are numerous individuals that she assists everyday that just want someone to exhibit that they care and understand. The education a public health nurse should obtain is a bachelor’s degree in nursing, which Barbara posses. “Public health nurses working with specific populations or in administration position should hold a master’s degree” ( Allender et al., 2010, p.839). Barbara discussed that before becoming a public health nurse she worked at St. Francis Hospital as med-surge nurse for five years, after that it was imperative that she change working environment. Barbara confirmed that working as a nurse in the hospital was extremely diverse then working as public health nurse. “Comparing public health nurse and general nurse, public health nursing is population based, focuses on the greater good, health promotion and disease prevention, and utilizes community resources. The general nursing is individual based, focuses on individual good, restoration of health and function, and manage resources at hand” (Minnesota Department of Health, 2007). In the beginning Barbara thought that public health nursing would be a difficult job to gain knowledge of however, she established that it was exceptionally effortless and gratifying career to posses. Barbara stated that she did not realize how much assistance was out there for the public until; she worked as public health nurse. Barbara spends 95% of her day going from place to place by doing home visits, investigating different cases, assisting with screening programs and enormous amount of paper work.
...th the patient I kept thinking that if this were my mother how would I want the nurse to treat her. I tried to behave in the way I would expect a nurse to treat me. I had preconceived notions before meeting the patient and they were all laid to rest almost immediately, honestly I was nervous. But once I started it began to feel comfortable and the interview just flowed naturally.
From a young age, I was drawn to the healthcare field, not because of the amount of money doctors, nurses and other health professionals made, but because of the dedication and contentment I saw on their faces helping someone in need. Growing up everyone wanted to become a doctor or a nurse and as a little child being a doctor or a nurse was a profession many parents wanted their child to pursue as a career. Needless to say, I fell into that category because I wanted too. However, that dream came to a halt.
