Personal Narrative: My First Job As A Medical Assistant

Do you remember your first job? Sometimes it’s an awesome experience and other times it’s an experience one would prefer to forget. I had multiple random jobs throughout my teenage years, but it wasn’t until working as a medical assistant at a local clinic did I considered myself having a “real” job. Coming in on the first day opened minded and thankful for the opportunity for this job, feelings of excitement and nervousness came over me. This job was intended to provide work experience, new skills, and hopefully some new friends.
After searching the parking lot for 20 minutes an open parking stall was finally spotted. Making my way into my first day at work, all the lights were on, the office very bright, and everyone already preparing to open. The day started off good and quite busy. After feeling a little in the way, the need to learn the new computer scheduling system and call lines interested me. Once learning it a greater amount of work was able to be completed. After learning how to run the office certain things began to catch my attention. The office “secrets”, the bad management, and the overall state of the office become clearer.

However, there were some beneficial aspects of the job. There were two girls, Leron and Kiana, who worked up front and were close in age with me. We ended up becoming friends and they helped me learn the ins and outs of the job. Most days we would go on our lunch breaks together and discuss work. Having friends within the office was great and made coming to work more enjoyable. Another benefit of working in the clinic was the amount I learned. A lot of responsibility was put on me early on before being properly trained. However, it allowed me to figure things out on my own and be less dependent of others. Working at the clinic enhanced the amount of attention paid to my surrounds and enabled me to better my customer service
