Walking up dilapidated stairs, my friend and I enter into the chapter room of Beta Sigma Psi, where the Little Sisters of the Gold Rose meets every week. The fraternity house smells of stale beer and sweat, and has clear signs of past parties and shenanigans. However, we have officially become activated members of the service sorority and were attending our first chapter meeting with the entire sorority. In that chapter room we discussed future service events, volunteering opportunities, and then went around the room for anyone to share news and announcements with the group. However, after finishing the rush process and talking to Katie Storm, the head of recruitment for LSGR, I can now see just how important rushing is for having the right members joining an organization. According to Storm, rushing “make[s] sure our potential new members [will] really fit into the organization overall… through rushing we can really get a feel for how each potential member [will] contribute to our active body.” Having potential members go through a rush process is the only way to for active members to see one’s character and true desires on joining the organization. Storm argues that “the active body really wants the future of the organization to succeed with the new members… rush is one of the most important aspects of LSGR because without it, our organization would fizzle out.” Rushing also benefits the potential member herself, as “the rush process is intended to show a preview to the interested member of what joining our organization will be like” (How to Join). While you could do research to learn about an organization before joining, rushing provides a way to gain real, valuable insight into the organization before actually joining. For LSGR, having different types of events during rushing has proved to be effective in assessing the characters of potential members. Having a creative activity, a competitive activity, and a more laid back, social activity allows for the active members to see the potential members engage in different settings and see if they are getting along within the organization. Only a few girls who have gone through LSGR’s rush process have ever not been invited to join the organization. Usually though, the potential member had “conflicts in communication skills, time management skills, and lack of excitement and energy about LSGR” according to Storm.
