Tyronne Gross and Otis Amey, two former NFL players, quickly climbed up the stairs as they buzzed with anticipation, looking forward to how many students they would be able to reach out to during their sixty-minute sojourn at Center High School. As they opened the door of the classroom, exclamations of praise and excitement greeted them. There were over eighty students gathered to hear the stories of these men and their journey through life as Christian athletes. As members of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, they were closely associated with our school's Transformed Bible Club, which I organized. The room quickly grew quiet, so quiet a person could hear their neighbor breathing. We all sat quietly and listened to the message both men brought forth to us. …show more content…

As we walked out, we were simply filled with happiness and excitement for what lay ahead in our lives. By having this seminar at our school with a good number of people in attendance, I was able to make our school a better place because our athletes are hopeful and they believe that if they have the talent make it into the NFL or NBA or MLB, then they could. I actually had some of the basketball and football athletes at our school thank our club for allowing motivational speakers like the NFL players to come and renew the confidence they had locked up inside.     Back in my high school, one day out of the month was dedicated to student-led clubs. On these so-called club days, most kids will go to any club just to get out of class. Some exclusive clubs, such as the Chess club, would look down on this. These groups would happily kick some kids, but there was one club happy to see everyone who came: the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The little exposure to Christianity found at this club was all that some kids would get and the moderators of my school’s club knew this. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes’s website lists the group’s mission which is to present the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, serving Him in their relationships and in the fellowship of the church to athletes and coaches and all whom they influence (FCA). No matter whether on the court or in a group-led bible study, FCA focuses on this mission.

Willie Hammond Jr. (the first black city councilor and county commissioner) and Laurence Hurd (a minister and desegregation supporter) were glimmers of hope for the black community that were both snuffed out. Hammond was arrested on charges of arson conspiracy and perjury and Hurd is in prison for burglary and robbery, leaving a hole in the morale of the black community that was not repaired. Yet, there is no shortage of black success stories in sports, like Michael Jordan and Bo Jackson; in every area that is not a “rich man’s sport”, black athletes dominate. To the poor children on the Southside, there is something very alluring about the “Cinderella stories” of men from poor black neighborhoods rising to prominence through sports. Based on these examples, there seem to only be two paths for a black teen to take: criminal or athlete.
